Hello all,

Good day!

Last month Prithayan and myself rode to Tirupati.  Currently heavy rains in Tirupati from last few days and all the water falls at their best condition. If any one interested, its best to time to do a tour around Tirupati.

Its a beautiful ride, nice tarmac road with less traffic. Started 4am from Bangalore and reached Talakona water falls by 3pm, spent good amount of time at Talakona water falls. By evening, it was started raining heavily, waited almost an hour at a small temple enroute Tirupati. Since no signs of reduction in rain, Continued riding in the rain. Could not able to enjoy the down hill ghat near Tirupati due to sharp corners, wet road, darkness, oncoming traffic with no divider.

Ride distance - 287 km
Elevation gain - 1150 mt
Pedalling time - 12 hour 20 minutes.

Day2 attend a marriage function at Tirupati and explored some beautiful water falls in Tirupati. Talakona reminds me all the beautiful treks done in this forest range. Currently shot at site orders due to red wood smugglers. Hope some day trek again.

Hi
did you esquire about climbing Tirumala..
does it require any special permission?

Thanks Jayaprakash, Sandeep.

@Ramey,
I could not able to check at the ghat entrance whether they will allow cyclists on the ghat. But locals says they never saw any cyclists on the ghat road. Its a 20km climb with 1000mt elevation gain..

Actually one can go directly to Tirupati, climb to Tirumala and explore water bodies & falls on the Tirumala.. Next day they can explore Talakona water falls..

I have this decathlon's mudguard mounted on my bike, looks great but seriously it's of no use in stopping splashing.  I'm having bad time riding in Bangalore weather.

This is the biggest of them available at the store, Can you name anything effective, available online?

Best,
~ Vasu

Depending on your budget, you have the following options:

1. Indian steel fenders, available from B.V.K. Iyengar Road or K.R. Market.
Pros: Full coverage, cheap
Cons: Designed for 1.75in wide tires (IIRC) and may need some DIY -
especially if you have QR wheels. Are cheap, will rattle and break if
not mounted properly.

2. RR Marathahalli used to stock cheap full coverage plastic fenders
(~1k for a pair). These are knockoffs of the Planet Bike fenders.
Pros: Lighter than steel
Cons: Needs lots of DIY

3. SKS Chromoplastics - full fenders
Most expensive of the lot (4-5K). You can buy online or from one of the LBSes.
Cons: Big upfront spend
Pros: You will never think about fenders again.

You need proper mudguards like these. I have an SKS longboard set and I have used similar planetbike fenders. Both chromoplastic, both offer great protection against the splash.

Yes you do. And if the rain biking Lord says you do, you know you do.

Anyway, I was at Happyearth yesterday and they have tons of mudguards in stock all the way from bluemels to longboards. The prices start from 2.5k to 4k I think, and not many of those are listed on their website. Give them a call and figure out if they have something that fits your requirements.

Awesome .. How did you get the cycle on the train on the way back? Booked it as luggage? How difficult is that ?

Thanks Shankar and Sanath.
Almost all fenders we stock are listed on our website. This is probably the one that most MTB riders need http://happyearth.in/store/product.php?id_product=448
