Hi all,

Got a puncture today while riding my Trek 4300D MTB. The air was escaping through the (schrader) valve... so a valve failure of some kind. Fixing that seems ruled out.

I had a spare tube, but it turned out to be presta valve tube. (it was for 26" wheels... so that matched.) Not having much choice, it used that tube in the schrader valve rim. The nozzle had a ring to secure the nozzle to the rim; ensure that was tightened.

I rode few kms with that, to my friend's place. Seemed to be ok. I will be riding home in some time... ~22kms. Wondering if riding with this config can be dangerous. (I will get a schrader valve tube before doing more rides.)

Any comments?

thx, -{db}.

Someone fitted presta valve tubes on one of my bikes and I have used it for two years without any problems. In fact the tube seem to be of great quality and they dont lose air for months sometimes! :)

I have done that on my firefox roadpro for both wheels. For a sense of security I added the cut portion of the patch where the schrader valve joined the tube and put that as a buffer over the presta valve joint. Haven't had any trouble for many months now.

Thanks Mayank / Rakesh. Good to know that this config works.

Rakesh -- I too was wondering if it might be good to add some padding around the presta valve, so that it's packed well into the Schrader valve slot. Otherwise there might put some extra strain on the presta valve nozzle.

Since the presta valve is thinner in size, if you have a double walled rim, water will go in between the walls if ride through water.
Once the water gets in, it wont go out by its own since the opening will be on top when the valve is at the bottom and water will be at the bottom when the valve is on top ;-)

This will happen only if you ride through places where water level is above the rim height.
I have a wheel with such a setup, and i had to remove the tires to get rid of the water.

Thank you,
Regards
Vishnu

Hi Arvind,

Kewl, you seem to have solution for all unusual problems.
Be it seat post clamp with pannier eyelets or Presta stem saver.

Thank you,
Regards
Vishnu
