My relatives on my father's side came from the Azores in the late 1800's.  They went to Hawaii and then moved to California.  I have found some information on where they came from, but not much more.  For the Freitas side I have Medeira listed, but the Oliveria's I only have the Azores Islands.  The Vierra's I just have listed Portugal.   I Have had my DNA done by ancestry and I had my MTDNA done by Family tree DNA, my mother's side is English.  But I did have my Ancestry transfered over to Family tree DNA in there family finder.  I can not believe how many realitives I have found on my father's side.  Sadly, only a few have contacted me.  But I have also found a few on Ancestry also. Seems that my great grandmother's brother had 17 children, and that seems to be the family that I am finding.  Just letting you know that I am here.

Madeira is a different autonomous region than the Azores islands. The Madeira Islands have only 2 islands that are populated and the Azores have 9 islands.

With the DNA, start by working your Family Finder Matches who have 100 cMs or more.

You'll have to do a lot of work in the U.S. to find your freguesia over there. There are some good sources for Hawaii though. To get started, check out this "how to" on the Azores GenWeb here: https://goo.gl/47BdVw
Good luck,

Diane, I have Freitas in Madeira.  How are you listed on FTDNA and also on Ancestry DNA?  Are you on GEDmatch.com?

Marie S,
Madeira isn't part of the Azores archipelago (maybe you know that). Yes, there's a freguesia called Faial on Madeira. How's that for confusing??  Cheri

I know Madeira is not part of the Azores.  I've been to Fayal, Madeira and to Terceira and Sao Miguel. .  Grandmother was from Vila Franca.

Marie S,

OK, I just wanted to be sure. Some people don't know that Madeira doesn't belong to the Azores. Glad you know!  Cheri
