Dear All,

Please, help if you can!

I am searching for the Birth or Baptism Certificate of my Great-grandparents, who have immigrated to Brazil. Antonio Gomes(z?) de Figueiredo, and his wife, Rosa de Almeida Figueiredo.

His Parents: José de Figueiredo e Justina Gomes.

Her Parents: Manoel Rodrigues e Joaquina de Almeida.

I have my Grandmother’s birth certificate, which has the names mentioned above, and that they are Portuguese - attached.

Note that my Grandmother was born in 1901 in Brazil. Her Parents may have been born between 1860 and 1885.

The majority of my closest Family Tree DNA Cousins are from the Azores.

Thank you.

Cordially,

Alexandre

HI Alexandre,

The birth you provided isn't specific. It only says Portugal and that could be the continent, the Azores, or Madeira. If the parents are the immigrants to Brasil, you'll have to use Brasilian immigration sources to figure out where in Portugal (or Azores or Madeira) that they came from.

As for your DNA matches, I would need to know what you define as your "closest Family Tree DNA Cousins" being from the Azores. Genetically, close is over 200-300 centiMorgans (cM). 100 cMs are workable.

You're going to have more Azorean matches because we encourage DNA testing. The Brasil DNA project has about 700 people. Madeira and Cape Verde are closing in on 300 people each. The Azores? We have over 1600 who have DNA tested. Because we all come from common Portuguese stock, you will see more Azoreans on your list than anything else. It doesn't mean much. You have to work with the cMs. If your matches are below 100 cMs, you don't have any close DNA matches. You need to "stack the deck" in your favor and start testing other relatives. If your parents are alive, test them (or any of their living siblings). If you have a living grandparent, test them (or any or their living siblings). Test known cousins. From this, you'll be able to active your Parental Matching on FTDNA and then over time, you'll be able to figure out blocks of DNA and attribute them to a particular ancestor.
Good luck, Cheri Mello, Family Tree DNA Admin (volunteer), Azores DNA Project

Alexandre,

Did your grandmother Maria do Carmo de Figueiredo come to the US?  Or did she live and die in Brazil?  If she came to US, where did she settle here?  Who did she marry?  Did Antonio/Rosa have any other children? I am not seeing any Macuco, Brazil records online but I could be wrong.

You could look at the passport records? I know that when my great grandfather entered the Brazil he had a passport entry from Terceira to Lisbon then to Brazil. He had a Port of Entry record at RJ. Both did not give much information but narrowed the span of years I needed to search. Maybe talk to Joao Ventura he might recognize the family names and direct you to a possible village. Also he know were certain families settle in Brazil and that might help you locate more information. Good luck with your search. Doreen

Hi Dorene

I’m curious about where you would find  Port of Entry record at RJ? My husband’s great grandparents left Terceira for Rio de Janeiro. I have found passports for themleaving Terceira and (hallelujah!) their marriage and birth of Wayne’s grandfather in Rio. Would love to find out more.

Kathy,
I checked FamilySearch.org and came up with this book, don't really know if it would help but you need to put it on your 'research log' for Salt Lake City!

Hi Kathy. Originally I got it from a professional genealogist I hired but after receiving his information (for which only some had web link) I went through locating the information that he provided as well as finding more records for the family. I’m looking for my notes on that research. It might be in an old version of FTM. I have these on older laptops so I will look for it but it may take time. The record I received from the genealogist did not have much information in it. I have attached it. Once I have the website where I located it I will sent a link. Have a great day.

There seems to be many books on the German/Italian/Japanese emmigration. I think they all hot footed it to South America during and after WWII.

Hi Cheri

Thanks for the excellent explanation. I naturally need to learn a lot more. I will also try with the Brazilian Immigration souce(s). Wish me luck as I do not know yet where to go for that. I confess I had been more excited about my Azores DNA matches.

Best regards,
Alexandre

Hello E. Sharp,

No, she did not go to the US. My Grandma did have one Brother and two Sisters but they all stayed in Brazil.
I found the Macuco small notary to be rather basic differently form the other nearby cities I have visited. They had to do a BOOK research themselves, as they do not appear to have it all digitalized.
Thanks.

Regards,
Alex

Hi Doreen,

No passports found. Yes, I should look into the port of entry records - if easily acessible online. I live 200 kms from the city of Rio de Janeiro, which was the federal capital until the 50's.
I will contact João Ventura.
Thank you.

Best regards,
Alex

Alexandre,
Here is a link to the original of the civil record for Maria do Carmo...record # 96, and continues on to the next page. I have a question. Was Maria do Carmo baptized? If so, what parish was she baptized in? I noticed from the civil record your family was near Cantagalo, RJ.; and the catholic church for that area is Santissmo Sacramento. I did a quick search but found nothing for Maria.

Aaron,

Fantastic!
I do not know about her baptism. Frankly I do not believe it would contain more information than the birth certificate I have attached here initially.
I have found some more - about her father now. It will be my next post...
THANK YOU!

Best regards,
Alex

Alexandre,

You don't know until you look. If the baptism of Maria says WHERE the parents were from, or told you where the parents were married, that's one more piece of information than you had before.

It took me 4 years and 25 different documents before I found my freguesia (done before things were online). You have to leave no stone unturned. Look for her baptism.

Hi Cheri,

A break through...I have found on the Brazilian National Archives (BNA) online a certain Antônio Gomes de Figueiredo that could very well be my Great-gradfather, Maria do Carmo's father. I have also found the ship's list of passengers. These two are attached here.

Lista Passag. Navio - Antonio - Pg 12 no. 114

I am unable to find alone the details of his passport and the name of the parents, which could confirm that it is him and to find out where his passport was issued and where he was born. So I wrote and e-mail to the BNA and am waiting for a reply. Toorrow I will call them.

Best regards,

Alex

Alex,

Not knowing when your great-grandparents were born, I don't know what to tell you about their siblings. Very few people have living great-grandparents. Will you find their siblings? I don't know. The next generation down, you mention nephews. Without any dates, it's impossible to tell if any of them are alive. All of my great-grandparents and their siblings are now deceased. So is all the next generation. Maybe some younger people have their grandparents generation alive (and their siblings). But without any reference of a year they were born, it's impossible to say.

You can access Sao Miguel records online up to 1905: https://tombo.pt/d/acores
1906-1915 should be at the Biblioteca e Arquivo in Ponta Delgada.

Good luck, Cheri

Hello Cheri, Rosemarie, and the team,

I will be visiting Ilha de São Miguel - Agua de Pau - for the first time. I will stay for 6 days (29 June - 05 July), and will go to rua dos Ferreiros to try and meet potential relatives.
I have attached a dossie I have prepared. I will make a few copies, go meeting people, and enjoy the freguesia.
I would like to learn about Maria Augusta Cabral siblings and nephews in order to make contacts more easily.
Would you have any hints, please?
Thank you.
