Hello All: I'm Al Viera and I work in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and am 100% Azorean. I will be available to help when you come for the Portuguese genealogy conference.

There is a genealogy conference held each year in Salt Lake City, which is the worlds largest genealogy conference called RootsTech. I have entered a film festival contest in conjunction with the conference. It is all about my Azorean roots.

In order to win the conference, I need to have votes for the video. If you wouldn't mind, I'd really appreciate it if you could vote for my video. You can find the video and the voting button at this link:

Thank you so much. Al Viera

    Al Viera,
My Terceira ancestors were Sephardic Jews who ended up there because of problems in Spain and then Morocco.  Do you have any information on Jews in the Azores?
I watched your video and already voted for it.  Lucky you to have so much ancestry information available!

Shiri, thank you for watching my video and voting. I really appreciate that.

Unfortunately I do not have information on Jews in those areas. But there are a series of books on the genealogies of Terceira island. Those might be helpful to you. They’re in the family history Library.

Thanks, Al

Al, you mention that you found some books on Santa Maria and Sao Miguel. Can you tell us what those were?
Thanks Fernando

He's probably talking about the Rodrigo Rodrigues books. The Family History Library has volume 1 only. It a 5 or 6 volume set and no longer in print :(

It does NOT cover 100% of the families of Sao Miguel and Santa Maria islands. However, if you work you lines back far enough, you will tie into something in the book.

Now, being a book, done by a human, there will still be errors. So you can copy what's there, but you should go and verify as much as you can with the records.

There is also a Book of Chaves from Santa Maria which I purchased a few years ago with someone’s help obtaining and shipping to me.  Not expensive.
I gave it to my nephew’s wife who’s is from the Chaves family and who was born on Santa Maria.

Hi Al,

Saw your video and voted.

I noted you said in the video you were linked  to

Gonçalo Velho Cabral

I have an Ana Vieira Vasconcelos in my tree from early 1800, but not a lot of info.
Married a Manual de Souza de Vasconcelos
f Tome Fernandes Alves    m Isabel Alves

Any connection?

Hi Bill C,
Gonçalo Velho Cabral lived from about 1400-1460 or so. You have about 400 years to research, I'm afraid.
Good luck and happy hunting,

Bill, my Grandfather “chose” the Viera name at marriage. He is the only Viera in my ancestry, so we probably don’t connect through that name.
