It appears that I am unable to select an icon for a home screen shortcut. When editing a flow, the dialog indicates "touch and hold to select icon", but this does not function, no selection of icons appears.
Samsung S26, One UI 8.5., Automate 1.53.0.

Automate doesn't show any dialog with "touch and hold to select icon".
If you mean the way to add an home screen shortcut, then it's usually, long-click a home screen, select Automate, select Flow start shortcut, then Automate will show a panel to let you pick a flow, and finally a panel to let you select an icon and label.
Does the Install home screen shortcut button in a Flow beginning block works?

I see, it's just a question of English. "An icon" would suggest there's more than one available to choose from. But it really means "the icon shown below".
I will set up an automate flow as a home screen widget and see if I'm able to select an icon from there, thanks.

What happens when you click the "Add" button?

Agreed, that dialog is shown by the system, report it to Samsung.

The flow shortcut gets added to the home screen correctly in either case. It's just a question of choosing one of the other built-in icons that Automate offers, and, as you say, that can only be done when adding the flow from the home screen directly.

When you first press Install Home Screen Shortcut button, there should be a window that appears before the one you show. By tapping the icon I get a menu letting me select a different one. This works for me on both Samsung with Android 16/OneUI 8.5, and on my Oneplus with Android 16/OxygenOS 16.0.8, with the latest Automate version 1.53.1.

The same goes when I add a flow start widget. On my Samsung, I have Flow start shortcut and Flow start widget, both of which also let me select a custom icon from the same menu. On Oneplus, I only have Flow start widget, but it also lets me choose a custom icon.
