Just joined the group.  Looks like it's been dormant for a while.

I'm just getting started with a planted tank again after about 10 years without one.  I bought a 29gal tank and stand, Current 24"-36" Satellite Pro LED light, Eheim 250 canister filter, and some driftwood at AquaTek today.  Their selection of plants was a bit sparse today, so I drove over to Fish Gallery and picked up a variety.

I'm in the process of setting everything up and hope to have it completed tomorrow.

I'm going to be doing something a bit different though, I'm going to try a dirted tank.  I picked up some Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix to be my base.  I wanted a black gravel look so I'm hedging my bets with capping that soil with Eco-Complete.

Hi Ray and welcome to our sleepy little group!

It's great to hear you're returning to the hobby and it sounds like you're off to a great start.  Being a veteran really helps especially when you're starting a soil based tank.  You've mineralized the soil already or is it going to be more humus like?

I haven't been out to Fish Gallery yet, though I pass them often.  I wasn't sure if they had a big plant selection.  That's good to know.  Mostly staple plants I'm betting.

Please do share some pics.  I know I love to follow a new tank!

I’m going to keep it more or less like it came out of the bag, so more humus like.  Probably pulled back from the edges a bit so you will only see the Eco-complete through the glass.

Actually I was quite impressed with their plant selection at Fish Gallery.  It’s the largest selection I’ve seen in Austin.  It’s at least twice the size of AquaTek’s plant selection.  I picked up some Wisteria, Corkscrew Vals, an Anubius, Micro Swords, and a mat of dwarf baby tears.

Welcome - we have been a little sleepy recently.

Post pictures! Sounds like a good start.

My planted tank crashed after a move  but I'm planning my rebuilding of it now!

I used to have several tanks and am thinking about getting one again.  What kind of fish will you be putting in it?  Does the dirted tank make it easier to maintain or do you think it will build up algae?  I ended up getting rid of my tanks before, because I had a really bad algae breakout.

Thanks,
Kristi Graham

I’m planning on putting some breed of Apistogramma in there.  I really like their brilliant colors.

Supposedly the darted tank provides better growing conditions for the plants, which in turn should allow the plants to soak up more nutrients and deprive algae from growing.  We’ll see if this is what really happens.  This is my first attempt at a dirted tank.
