Help! I went to start my Spitfire for the first spring run. The battery has been on a trickle charger and seemed good (lights, ect all worked}. When I turned the key to the first position, I had good power, the cooling fan came on and it seemed all was good to go. When I engaged the starter, there was a single "pop" and I lost all power. Any ideas where to start looking? Thanks!

I am not that familiar with the Spitfire wiring, but I downloaded a schematic off the internet, and there are three fuses. Assuming one of these popped, this might explain the blackout. The top fuse runs the wipers and the heater fan, the bottom fuse runs the horn, and the middle fuse runs the headlights. If any of these work, you can figure out which fuse is bad. If nothing works, there is no common fuse that runs everything, so I would start looking for loose or burned wires. I would focus on the battery terminal wires, and the wires to the starter solenoid. Let me know what you find, and the year of the car might help.

Thank you so very much. It's a 1980 1500, and this is my first british car. I'll let you know what I find.

From personal experience on my Spitfire (the one I owned in college in 1980...) I had a similar situation. The "pop" was the ignition switch shorting out as I engaged the starter...... Just another thing to check out.

Joe,

Here’s a link to a nice color coded schematic for your car.
