Hi SWAT Users,
I have some confusion regarding the crop scheduling. I have to create crop schedules for different crop. For example, Winter wheat is growing in October in year 1 but harvesting in August in year 2. So  My question is, what is
the best way to account for this rotation since winter wheat's  planting schedule spans two calendar years. If I use number of rotation year( NROT) is 1 then how SWAT will deal with this ?
Is the Operation shown below is okay?

NROT: 1

October Year 1: Planting of Winter wheat
  Year1 : Auto fertilization
  Year 1: Auto Irrigation
August Year 2: Harvest and kill of Winter Wheat

or should I do in this  way?

 NROT: 1

August Year 1 : Harvest and kill of Winter Wheat
October Year 1: Planting of Winter wheat
  Year1 : Auto fertilization
  Year 1: Auto Irrigation

 Management Operations:
1    | NROT: number of years of rotation
Operation Schedule:
  10 2                    1   28          1800.00000   0.00     0.00000 0.00   0.00  0.00
                  0.010 11    1             0.75000   0.00     0.00000 0.00   0.00
                  0.150 10    2   3        91.00000   0.75    63.00000 0.00                       1
  08 01                   5                  0.00000
                17

 Management Operations:
1    | NROT: number of years of rotation
Operation Schedule:
    08 01                  5                  0.00000
   10 2                    1   28          1800.00000   0.00     0.00000 0.00   0.00  0.00
                  0.010 11    1             0.75000   0.00     0.00000 0.00   0.00
                  0.150 10    2   3        91.00000   0.75    63.00000 0.00                       1

Jannatul,

Here is an example of a WWHT .mgt configuration which worked for me (in an Indiana watershed). The harvest does take place before the initial planting, but this didn't give me any errors. Note that the model will not show any harvest of wheat in the first year of simulation, but if you have a warmup period this should be okay.

Management Operations:
1    | NROT: number of years of rotation
Operation Schedule:
  3  1           3    4           243.00000   0.00
  7  1           5                  0.00000   0.00
  9 23           3   25           224.50000
  9 29           6   97             0.00000
  9 30           1   28             0.00000   0.00     0.00000 0.00   0.00  0.00

Hi Jannatul,

I hope you don't mind, I'm responding to your message here on the forum so others can weigh in on the heat unit versus date-indicated operations. I'm not sure if you can mix the two (though I think you can).

As to your other questions, yes, you have the operations order correct. Wheat grown in Indiana does not require irrigation beyond what is provided by rainfall. I usually don't know the exact fertilizer dates in my simulation area either so we just make some assumptions about when they take place. Rather than using the auto fertilization function, this allows us to use rates as determined by local universities to simulate fertilizer input. If you happen to be working in the midwestern USA, a great resource for determining this is the Tri-State Fertilizer Recommendations.

Hi Boles,
Thank you for your reply. If I am not wrong you have used Fertilization-Harvest and kill-Fertilization-Tillage-Planting operations for wheat. So you are not using Irrigation Operation?  I dont know the exact dates of fertilization and Irrigation for my crops. I only know the planting and harvesting dates. Can I use dates for the planting and harvest operation and  heat units for the fertilization and Irrigation Operation? Like example shown below
Will it work?

   08 01                  5                  0.00000
   10 2                    1   28          1800.00000   0.00     0.00000 0.00   0.00  0.00
                  0.010 11    1             0.75000   0.00     0.00000 0.00   0.00
                  0.150 10    2   3        91.00000   0.75    63.00000 0.00                       1

Thanks Chelsie. I am trying to use operations according to date and heat Unit. I hope it will work.

Hi Vhelsie
Sorry to bother you again. I want to ask you something. I have used 10 different crops (like winter wheat, potato, barley...). I have scheduled the crop operations based on the heat Units as i dont know the exact Dates of the different operations for all the crops. The operations that I used for the crops are shown below with the heat units
Planting or begin of growing    0.15
Auto fertilization                       0.01
Auto Irrigation                          0.16
harvest and kill                        1.2

The operations are same for all the crops. Is it okay to use the same heat Units for all the crops  instead of the Dates? I am wondering how the SWAT model can differentiate each crop as the operations are same for all the crop.
Will there be any seasonal effect in the hydrograph for this case?
