Good day Heikki

I recently discovered https://aprs.fi/ and I was curious about the API limit per day. As a hobby project, I am building a ferry application to report the ETA for our water taxis in Trinidad and Tobago. This would be a free service.

I estimate 60 API calls per day. What's the current limit?

Would a bottle of rum increase the limit further? ;0

You might not charge for it, but the data supports a commercial enterprise.
Wouldn't a twitter feed be more appropriate?

True about twitter. Using it as a hobby project to learn react.

Government ran organization so I don't know if I would use the word commercial to describe their operations. Lol

Let me know if I'm allowed to use aspri fi. I don't intend to violate your policies. From the API documentation, it seems to allow it with a limit on the API calls. If there is some fee that google ads can help me cover, I would be willing to contribute.

Hi,

That level of use will easily fit in within the API limit (which I don't
exactly remember from the top of my head). If you're fetching positions of
multiple targets, do so with a single API call. It supports fetching many
at a time, and the rate limits are for number of API call.

Good rum is always good rum, but I'd have to actually write more code to
support individual per-user limits, and that'd take a cask. :)

Happy hacking!

If you go to aprs.fi and scroll/zoom to New York City, you can see the tracks of many ferries up and down the East and Hudson rivers.

Looking into a randomly chosen track, I see things in packet info: " 367778670 > ais via K6UAN"

Maritime AIS info:
It's an international regulation that all passenger vessels use AIS, presumably the ferries you are interested in already have it or should have it.

Looks like someone ( K6UAN) is capturing over the air and feeding into aprs system? Or Does APRS.fi take an AIS feed in itself?

You can go to https://www.vesselfinder.com/ and zoom around and see the same info.
