Hey guys my name is greg I was involved in a serious climbing accident almost 2 years ago a couple months ago I regained the ability to walk and I'm in physical therapy and trying to get back the muscles that I want to had. I am scared of the things that I read on here but I'm gonna push past and try to find a solution to the problem and if I fail that's fine I really want to Windsor again I don't want to paddleboard, but I will try. I want to hike again,I want to climb a little bit, people say no, Although I know I will meet my limitations please let me meet them on my own construct, although I do like hearing people that have experienced ankle fusion and not just people of been taught about it so if anybody has any wisdom to guide me through these difficult times of realizing that I am now slightly disaboled. I do understand I will face things that I used to do that I won't be able to, but dammit someone give me a good story please,

Hi Greg,  I think most folks in this group only had one ankle fused like I did. The only thing I found I could no longer do well is walk slopes.   Like we have a deep ditch in front of our house, steep incline....that I can no longer cut because my ankle has a hard time managing to walk down it. Or climbing a ladder I find hard to do.  Other than things like that I have no problem doing most anything. But I have noticed I can tell the weather now.  ha ha I had my fusion in 2007.

Best of luck.

Greg,
Curious to know if you considered Total Ankle Replacement before getting the fusions?

Hi Vickie! Thank you for your story, I just recently found out about the incline thing to, I had to use my toes to climb, so it will be interesting, I thought I would be climbing mountains again one day but now I think I might have to come to terms with some of my ambitions. Btw my doctor recommended Hoka running shoes to help me walk without a limp and wow, people can't even tell I have had fusions unless they see the braces under my shoes lol. But I highly recommend Hoka shoes, I bought two pair in one day. I need black for work. They are very safe shoe for us bionic ankle people's, I live in Vegas so the humidity rarely changes but before it even rains my ankles tell me. Are you able to live without opioids?

It was told to be by two ankle specialist that I would only do that as last ditch resort. They told me to do that if I run into problems as I age. But right now I'm doing great. I found a new shoe recommended by my surgeon for ankle fusions. Hoka is the name, and it is quite an amazing shoe, I can walk absolutely normal with them. If I take them off I limp a lot. Did you have TAR done?

I learned to traverse steep loops as a down hill skier.  Now I traverse slopes when I walk.

That's great that you're finding shoes that work for you, it amazing how we adapt when we need to. Yes I had a TAR done in 2011. With the TAR you have some movement so makes hills a little easier. I started a Facebook group called Total Ankle Replacement Group. Some of the folks there have had double TARs. I think our youngest recipient is 25 years old. It is always surprising how uninformed doctors are about TARs.
Guess it is because it is relatively new. The good news is a fusion can be taken down and replaced with a total ankle replacement if you are ever considering that option down the road.
Best of luck to you!

Greg, my doctor had told me I could do anything I did before the surgery.  He was wrong.  ha ha I can't even jog like I use to. Well, I can but not for long.  I don't wear special shoes although after I got out of the cast and air boot....I did wear good tennis shoes with a lot of support.  It took me months to regain the muscle back in my leg too.  I remember feeling like the ankle fused leg felt shorter until I started exercising the leg.  The incline thing....I can't tell you the number of times I fell down in the ditch and then had to crawl back out.  LOL

No pain pills. Once I started healing, I didn't need them but maybe an Aleve or two.  But to this day I still have some numbness and "pinging" if I am on my feet too long.

So you wear braces?

Paula,

This is very interesting to learn . . . my doctors told me that ankle replacements were only for very little old ladies who sat in rocking chairs most of the time.  Somehow I get the impression that that's not you!  LOL!

I had my fusion done in 2011 and still have swelling and pain (though mostly it's not unbearable).  The biggest challenge I have is climbing up and down the ladder when I swim. Ladders are hard enough, but without shoes on, it's really tough!

Denise :)

I have no pain or swelling with my ankle.
Maybe mine was not as smashed up as some people's
Using a cane can be helpful in getting up slopes when hiking or the like with unbending ankles

Sorry about that sending with no message.  ha ha

Brian, I had no accident.  My tendon ripped apart causing my ankle to fall. I wore a brace for almost a year before I had surgery. So mine was a repair.  Fixing the tendon and then doing a fusion with 3 screws.  I've tried using a cane for walking up and down slopes....or in my case a well dug-out ditch....and it helps but not all the time. I still can't climb ladders well.

If the ladder rungs are small, I cannot climb them.  But steps I can....like a staircase.  If I do have to climb a ladder I have to put my foot sideways on the rung.

Denise - Definitely not a little old lady in a rocking chair! I am working in heels every day and out dancing almost every Friday night. A few months ago I was hiking in Yosemite with no pain!  The TAR has given me my life back.  I think a lot of doctors have not caught up on the new recommendations around Total Ankle Replacements. They used to say they lasted only 10 years and less with more active people therefore would only give them to older people that were not active. But that has changed. We have people in our group that are going on 17 years with no problems.

Hi Larry... would you mind sharing your experience of having a fused ankle and how that affects you now? I used to be very active (mtn climbing, snowboarding, mountain marathon running) and am considering a fusion or TAR.  Your healing time, how long it has been, any issues, and abilities now? - Brian

morning everyone,

I have my right ankle fused on 2012 and still have the implants, am currently experiencing unresolved swelling hence the pain. I have seen various doctors with an attempt to remove the implants  but to my surprise they seem not to buy my request instead there are suggesting triple arthrodesis as a permanent solution. Anyone here with triple arthrodesis and or who have had implants removed? Thank you,

I am sorry to hear about your fusion surgery but wonder if you've looked into any management tools as you recover? Transdermal CO2 increases microcirculation and is worth a look:
