Hi,
For a few weeks I'm feeding myself with Material Design, and I'm telling myself that it's good.
That's why I prepared Anki logo with help of Google guidelines. Reason is, current icon looks old, and not so clean. I just can't look at shiny gradients, and black borders of actual icon.

Gradients are softer, and stars have some depth, as they were paper stickers, on folded grey card.

Best regards, Norbert 'not7CD' Szulc

Thanks, simplifying the logo could be a good idea. Would you be able to post a 2-d version (i.e. on a flat grey card) so that we can compare?

Looks great! :-)
And quite in line with the guidelines, if I understand them correctly.
The strict guidelines might ask for dropping the white edge of the stars, but it is also important to keep the Anki identity recognizable.

Damien might want to say something about this? I BCC him this discussion.

Cheers!

I looked at the guidelines, and tried my hand at a completely new icon based on those.
The idea was just the clipped blue star with the white backgroud.

Unfortunately, my graphics design talent and my inkscape experience werent enough.

The rectangles in the SVG should be used to clip the star. I was probably doing something wrong, but maybe somebody likes my idea and knows how to do this.

I mean the clipped star of the current one-star app icon (different from the old two star icon in the OP) And by white background i meant the white star-shaped background. (When you click on show (my attachment) it shows a rectangular white background, not what i meant.)

(And i think there should be a way to edit Google groups post after you posted them.)

And thanks for the OP icon. Looks better than the old one.

But maybe the bigger star shouldn’t get the crease. When the star is a piece of material above the card, and the card is folded, then the star would not be folded.

I as well as Tim hope so.
The central line might be difficult to understand without explanation.

Hello,

what a coincidence. I have actualy iterated a few posible designes of Anki icon about a week ago. I agree the icon needs update too. I'd like to share with you my design - I wanted to give it more diverse shape - and this is what I liked the most:

I'm not sure about the color - this bright yet subtle version is looking nice on the icon, but it is quite a big change.

Hi all,

I designed the original Anki icons - back when shiny gradients were cool. I just wanted to say I like the new designs you're playing with, particularly Norbert's folded card. Although I agree it's a little strange having the top of the star crossing the crease. Maybe try moving that star along its axis to the lower left, and scale it down a bit?

Cheers,
Alex

Like Tom I designed my own replacement icon a while back and though I might add it to the discussion. It's seems to me a bit too flat now after seeing the alternatives though.

I designed the original Anki icons

Thank you for the good work.
I've been content with the icon, and haven't cared what concept it has,
but now, I'd like to know that to consider new design.
What does the dark grey rectangle represent? Card? Android device?

I'd like to stress that it doesn't matter what it is. I like that it's ambiguous. But to me, it's a card; like the back of a playing card.

I see. Thank you.

At least for now I hope the dark grey color will be inherited by new design,
so I also like the Norbert's folded card best,
though it is still difficult for me to recognize the current design as an folded card.

To satisfy your curiosity :D here is probably worst case scenario (icon on light grey background). The star is doing its job as an anchor for eyes. (similarly as Norberts would on dark background).

Since I saw quite a lot of people like dark icons, I tried the inverted colors just for fun, let me know what you think!

Yes, that fold is quite strange. Maybe moving that star over it would help. I also like Svaboda's version. My design is something like refreshment for old one. But your is great.
I was also thinking about new widget. I will post tomorrow source and other ideas.
Thanks for suggestions. I'm still learning as a hobbyist.

The dark icon looks great too, it is also much more similar to the existing icon, in terms of colors.

How about making its lower part much darker, maybe nearly black?
The difference in color hints at the front/back concept, so I think it is important.
While this difference is obvious in the bright version, in the dark version I find it much harder to spot. Or is it just me?

Now that I see the bright icon again, I somehow thought of a text editor. Most text editors are a white page with a smaller overlay, just like this. On the opposite, the dark icon does not feel like a text editor at all, which is good.

Cheers!

How about we make a poll with everyone's submissions? Probably the following rules should be sufficient:

1) The source vector file must be submitted in .svg format together with a 192px x 192px png of the rendered result
2) You must be willing to release it under the GPL license
3) The icon should follow the material design guidelines for "product icons", though it doesn't have to follow them exactly

Multiple submissions with several different variations (e.g. light and dark background, with or without a particular element, etc) are encouraged. Collaboration and remixing of other people's designs is also encouraged!

As I previously mentioned I'd really like to see a few different variations on Norbert's design, and I also quite like both the light and dark versions of Tom's design (I really can't decide which).

@Alex,
> What does the dark grey rectangle represent? Card? Android device?
I'd like to stress that it doesn't matter what it is. I like that it's ambiguous.

I feel so, too.
I feel attracted to the ambiguousness of the simple dark grey rectangle.
Each users can interpret it respectively.
Card, Android device (smart phone or tablet), black box, something mysterious yet intellectual ...

For me, it is a monolith, which triggers tremendous shifts in my memory and study.

Therefore, I doubt the necessity to add a folded line or text lines on the rectangle.
They limit the meaning of the rectangle.

I really like both Norbert's and Tom's suggestion.
In the former, I'd also leave out the folded line, it is so thin anyway.
I agree with Tim, that Tom's light icon looks somewhat like a generic text editor icon, but I really like the dark one!

Ok,
I found a while to post something. But for upcoming week i have very intense time in school.
So I will drop what I have for now.

Fixed score, after your advice. Maybe I missed something.

Also in other popular design philosophy. Flat Design and it's long shadows. Second one with light white radial gradient, so it isn't so flat.

Ok.
So I want bring Svoboda's icon back to discussion.
It looks fresh and very modern. Your icon achieved something between flat and material design I think (I ain't so skilled). I looks great, but it's something new. It will definitely work great as widget. Since old icon is somehow a brand, and I tried to refresh that brand with today's standards, your version might be quite drastic change. But still love it. It might add something new to overall iconography in anki. Since it might serve as card icon, or anki file format, as someone pointed. I would love to see it in action. If not as product icon, then next to 'learn' button, because that stack of papers doesn't look materialish too ;).
Best regards, not7CD.

Hi Norbert,

That stack of papers is gone, the activity itself has been removed :-)

Another graphic element is the kind of banner in the drawer, we discussed it a few months ago but a new icon would probably have some impact on it too, I guess.

Cheers!

Second one is totally flat, no gradients.

  • These dark grey rectangles are both flat and no gradient, right?

Thanks, I like both of these flatter designs, although I slightly prefer the one with the subtle gradient on the stars.

It doesn't look like anyone else is coming forward with a design, so how about engaging the larger AnkiDroid community and getting some votes?
We should probably have a separate vote for the icon and the widget. I'd definitely be open to / encourage the possibility of having a completely different design for the app icon and the widget (e.g. Norbert's design for the icon and Tom's design for the widget or vice-versa).

So far the dark one star icon is by far the most popular. After looking at it more closely I think I just initially didn't like shade of blue that was used, so I've added two variations mixing Norbert's color gradient into Tom's design:

I'll keep the poll running but this is the tally so far; there's a pretty clear majority for Tom's "one star dark" design:

Original Icon2826.2%
Two stars icon (A, B, C)2220.6%
One star icon dark (D, E, F)4844.9%
One star icon light (G)98.4%

Here's my proposal for the final icon with less "round" shape as requested by Nicolas and slightly less gradient.
I wasn't sure how to edit the star shape in Tom's design so I just copied the whole path across which is a bit hacky but it works.

Should we run a secondary poll among the dark one star variants? If it takes too much time, I guess nobody will be offended if you just select the one you prefer, though.

The shadow is a function on the star element.

Thanks a lot Tom, I didn't notice as I'm a total n00b! There seems to be a problem with svg file you provided though, the shadow element can't be found in Inkscape 0.48

Ok but there are two "linked image not found" errors and I can't see the shadows. The other svg files didn't have this problem. Maybe you accidentally rasterized the shadows or something?

It seems Inkscape doesn't have it implemented, browsers show it ok. I tried different settings on save, let me know if it helped.

By the way, if you're motivated to redesign the widget as well that would be most welcome!

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, nobody is working on the widget at the moment AFAIK, so your help would be greatly appreciated!
The current widget is quite old and a bit hacked together, so you can keep as much or as little of it as you like / have time for. I didn't make it myself so I can't really tell you why certain things are the way they are, but it's composed of an xml layout resource and a java file, together with the various drawables referenced within:

Cheers,
Tim

Hi, if you still want to help with the widget, what do you need? just a frame for the numbers, or is it made from several assets? For Anki I would do anything :D

@not7CD

I've used your two star design with the long shadows as the icon on the Google Play store listing (this was the most popular variation among the two star designs in the poll). You mentioned previously in this thread that you'd be interested in designing some other stock images for us; that would be great, thanks! We also need a new 1024px by 500px "feature graphic" for the banner on Google Play. If you (or anyone else) is interested in working on that, it would be much appreciated! Currently we're using the feature-graphic image on github.

Also, since apps can have multiple widgets, you're welcome to make an alternative widget using your design, which users can choose from in addition to the standard widget. Making a widget will require a basic understanding of xml and java, but of course we're always happy to answer any technical questions.

Great to hear. I will try to find some time for that.
Also for the widget. I think it should have some inspiration in real learning cards. I would love to see little box of anki cards waitng for me to revise them.

Any ideas on how to make the icon adaptive to launchers that want to use a round icon?

@Tom Svoboda if you still read us. Can you confirm that the logo was shared under GPL as was requested by Tim. Or better, would you accept to claim it’s shared under either public domain or creative common licence?

Regards,
Arthur
