I use SourceForge download for this release because
the googlecode doesn't offer download function anymore.

I haven't used SourceForge download for a long time.
It seems my settings was wrong so the file was hidden.
Now it should be fixed.
Sorry for that.

Booting//working on x200 thinkpad (i915) must use nomodeset boot arg, this disables opengl.
Still trying to get a build working again, mageia4 uses make v4 so the build borks.

On X200 with wacom pen, cannot seem to get working calibration with wacom-input, ts_calibrate  mostly works if you create the missing /data/system/tslib/ dir the pointercal lives in
Still working that as it could be malpractice on my part, biggest issue I see is forcing the screenmose or being able to manually tweak the pontercal, have not figured out which number is which

The binary inputattach i posted previously works fine, as it uses the kernel wacom module and does not need external calibration.

You have an ntrig pen setup

Ntrig ships on android devices... may need something like inputattach, might do a little research to see if yours is serial or usb based.

SUSE Linux may work out of the box, try the live cd, you will then be able to see exactly what hardware you have and the needed drivers etc.

its possible you just need to know to load the kernel module.

Hi all. I have already tried it on my home computer. There is a big difference between this release candidate and previous 4.3-20130725! There is a big step forward! System boots up very quickly and doesn't freezes. And there is much more available apps on Play Store: Google+, Chrome, Play Music and other. But system contains same bugs as in early version:
1) the system freezes when going to sleep (the solution is turn off sleep mode in settings -- display -- sleep);
2) the system reboots when I try to connect my Apple Magick Trackpad as input device
And there is a new bug: icons on main screen have a graphical "garbage" on their bottom line.

Thanks to all people who worked on this release!

  • wow, great release. works well on my netbook.
  • faster and seemingly more stable
  • dpm enabled for radeon gpus? seems that way, not running as hot.
  • hd video support in youtube, choppy but works
  • controller support
  • a few texture bugs remain is some games, more games and apps became compatible and became incompatible[crashes etc.].
  • wifi now works with broadcom chipset.
  • usb hubs seem to freak it out[or my bluetooth adapter via a usb hub]
  • still no netflix, is it possible?

working on a video uploaded later.

Test on Lenovo s10 (atom N270, RealTek HDA CODEC ALC269, wifi card BCM43xx)
Has no issue booting up and shutting down.
Wifi, audio, video playback works.
A small amount of apps like Google Earth shows not compatable with the system.
Heat generated by the machine has semingly reduced a tiny bit?! Will try it on SSD after the suspend/resume issue got resolved.

Issues:

The only issue I encountered is the netbook cannot turn the display off and keeps reading HDD after entering sleep mode. In order to get out of it
I have to mess with the keyboard for a while. It seems to receive key strikes, by looking at numberlock and capslock, yet in a very much delaied fashion. Sometime I have to force shut down as nothing works. Is this originated from some hacks to enable keyboard wakeup?

Are you sure you have synced the latest kitkat-x86 branch? Make sure the launcher you built is Launcher3 instead of Launcher2.

Hi,
I have tried the live boot version on my Lenovo S10-3t.
It's much better concerning the wifi working already from live boot (my main installation is still on 4.0.4 because it's the best version so far for s10-3t).
Called Antutu - 7945. Seems the same as in 4.0.4.
So far feels good to try a full installation.

Thanks so far!

Issues: Launcher seems to cut the text under the icons. So on my 1024x600 display the text according to the icons is not readable.

*** Question ***
Root partition: Still limited to 2 GB? Could not verify that with live boot. Would be nice if anyone could report if that limitation is gone now!

Thanks a lot!!!

I tested on my Thinkpad T510 and my Thinkpad X61s

T510:
I works out of the box. I have a 24 inch FullHD monitor attached via HDMI. Sadly there is no way to configure resolution or deactivate the output to the T510's screen - the screens are mirrored and I don't know how to change it.
Also Android is displayed at the same resolution on the 24' monitor as on my T510. This means the image on the 24' inch monitor is not fullscreen but there is a black frame around android.

X61s: I need to use Mesa at the bootmenu. OpenGL doesn't work. It worked in previous releases (I think 4.0).

Really great release! It would be nice to be able to configure attached screens and their resolution ;)

Thanks!
Carsten

Hi, thanks for the release!

I'm running a netbook by 'zoostorm'. Sound, network, inputs, etc all working! I installed /system as read/write when asked.
Wireless seems to be dropping out occasionally
System crashes causing soft reboot; Youtube (and some apps I installed) not working possibly permissions related (formatted ext3)

Just looking at logcat now.

I installed 4.4 RC1 on my netbook (Aspire one D255) and it works fine but I want dual boot it with linux.

I know the process http://www.webupd8.org/2012/03/how-to-dual-boot-android-x86-and-ubuntu.html and I found the line for 4.0 RC1, 4.0 RC2 and for the 4.3 jelly bean but for the latest I can't found ( I'm not a good linux user)

I try this one but it don't work :

 menuentry "Android 4.4-RC1" {
set root=(hd0,5)
linux /android-4.4-RC1/kernel quiet root=/dev/ram0 androidboot.hardware=android_x86 video=-16 SRC=/android-4.4-RC1
initrd /android-4.4-RC1/initrd.img
}

I think it's this parkt is wrong : android_x86 video=-16 SRC=

Have you ever concidered to do the installlation on an usb stick or on a sdhc card.
The sdhc version is what I use as a"dual boot".
It also means that I can take the sdhc to another computer.

The problem was ME only ME, I made an error when I tape the line !!! The only things you must change it's the number of the partition "(hd0,?)

4.4-RC1

works well in virtualbox, v4.3.6, including eth0, german keyboard, several news apps, such as "tagesschau" (sound and video). Considerably better than the previous 4.3.
So far, I did not get google maps and the camera working,

It's already pretty nice with google service support with all the core google apps. The app support for me is actually enough. The recent VLC x86 nightly seems to be malfunctioning (maybe it's the nighlty itself causing the problem), yet mx player works pretty well.

The only thing holding me back from moving out of thinkpad 4.0.3 version is the suspend/resume issue. Old atom cpu generates considerable heat. The sleep mode keeps the temperature at bay by turning almost everything off whenever I leave the laptop.

I installed it on a Windpad 110W and it is wroking great.
For others who want to do it check, that the Partitions are formatted the right way and before you install this version.
Suspend and Gyro doesnt work, but in oppsite to Win7 it is now a great working tablet.

EeePC 701 & 1000HD use old Celeron CPU
that are not supported since android 4.x.

You need a CPU with SSE3 at least.

I'm on  an asus eeetop et1602 with atom n270 and i915.
same here, with nomodeset it's working but without opengl.
Without nomodeset it's booting with black screen but i think it is working because i can hear the buttons' sound.
logcat is telling me:

E/GRALLOC-KMS(...): failed to set crtc (permission denied) (crtc_id 3 , fb_id 28, com 8, mode 1368x768)

so i think that is something wrong with the function drmModeSetCrtc in xf86drmMode.c because the mode is wrong: my correct mode is 1366x768.

Is it possible that is reading wrong resolution somewhere?
thanks

Thank you for bringing Android to the X86 machines.
I installed in my Hanvon B16 with a GMA500 graphic. The google map can't display anymore because no hardware acceleration.
Is there a way for GMA500 to have the hardware acceleration ability. I hate Intel to totally abandon this chip.

Thanks for a great release. I've been waiting for this for a long time.

It's working well on my Acer Aspire 5542g - 15.6" - Turion II M500 - 4 GB RAM - 320 GB HDD.

Most of the apps I tried work - BS Player, Chrome, ES Explorer, Currents, uTorrent, PrivateInternetAccess VPN app.

These didn't work, or had issues - MX Player, VLC Player, Splashtop Personal

I didn't try any games.

There were two issues - computer won't wake from sleep (disable this in settings), and apps that open in portrait mode lock the screen in portrait mode (lock screen rotation).

Thanks a lot for your work.
I finally got to the end of the compilation, and got my iso booting
and installing tonight.
The vbox_x86-eng didn't want to compile because of a duplicate (kroush
supersu and another soft), but the android_x86-eng works fine for me
(VirtualBox on a HP Probook 6450b).

Best wishes,

Hi everyone

I've installed android-x86-4.4-RC1.iso on my MSI Wind U-100 and I'd like to share the results.
When I first tried to boot, I'd get stuck before reaching the logo screen. I then managed to boot on 'nomodeset' and then, after that, I rebooted normally.
*What works well:
- Display (I've tweaked things a bit from the terminal( density 170, size 1280x800)
- Trackpad (including the scrolling keeping the finger on the corners of the pad)
- Brightness and volume controls
- WiFi
- Audio
- USB ports
- Bluetooth (I haven't used it much though)

*What doesn't work:
- Sleep/standby: the display blacks out but the computer won't go on sleep mode. Sometimes the screen comes back on its own, sometimes it reboots itself.

*What I haven't tested:
- SD card reader
- Ethernet port

So far, this is the most compatible version I have tried, and I'd like to thank everyone that helped on its development.

Thank you!

support. Unfortunately there is no n-trig driver for linux

N-trig driver is built as a module in the 4.4-RC1 release.
You should check if the module is loaded correctly.
Try modprobe hid-ntrig

Everything is working great & overall performance is much better than 4.0_r1 on my ASUS EeePC 1005HAB. However, the camera force closes. It worked using 4.0_r1. I captured a logcat with Syslog, here's the output: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ncvo92ouudy3ri/2014-02-24_14.36.zip

you should be able to run it from the alt+f1 root teminal, an if it works, add it to /system/etc/init.sh so it runs automagically.

Hi,

I'm very happy with 4.4.. However I run my androids on a hyper-V platform.
4.2 had I minor bug that I fixed with a post from someone else because it didn't loaded the appropriate HV modules. After that 4.2 runs like a charm on hyper-v.

4.3 and now 4.4 directly installs without modifications on hyper-v however performance is degraded .
I looked further in to that and found out that the kernel drivers module in the folder HV called hv_utils and HV_VMBUS no longer exists in 4.3 and 4.4.
This is the exact reason why performance is degraded on hyper_v and mouse integration disk integration (snapshots) etc.. is no longer functioning.

I'm looking for some help to get the correct modules in 4.4 working so you would have a great x86 virtualization support for 4.4 as well ...

First, you have to make sure hid-ntrig is the driver
you need and it's loaded correctly.

If it said modprobe: not found, try
busybox modprobe hid-ntrig
then
lsmod
to check if the module is loaded.
(If you switch to console by Alt-F1, use Alt-F7
to switch back to graphic mode. If it doesn't work,
try the command:
stop; start
to restart the graphic mode.
Then check if touch works.

If not, you're not lucky.
Go back to ubuntu to figure out
what driver it uses.
(show us the output of dmesg & lsmod)

Then I have said, you have to check what driver
that ubuntu uses and port it to android-x86.

Tested on Acer Aspire E1 - 471G, almost everythings works, i'm using camera360 to make camera can capturing, but my wifi is still a problem, i can connect (with several tries of obtaining IP address) but then after few seconds the connections is break, still connected to wifi but no internet access, and the MAC address says "unavailable" it's not a really big deal actually, at least i can use joypad to play N.O.V.A XD

On my laptop (Compaq CQ42 intel Processor), everything running well. Camera, wi-fi, sound, I will test to play video later. The only make me annoyed is I can't copy file to intenal storage (sdcard legacy), while I'm copying a file it's noticed me "Not enough space". In system setting my free space is 8Gb. But tq very much for your great job. I will report more later.

On my Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 14 is running fine, the touchscreen working perfect, audio, video....

Hard to boot sometimes it boots, sometimes not.

When it hangs on kernel boot it show 2 different messages

1.Switching to clocksource tsc (then hangs)
2.VFS: could not find a valid V7 on sda1 (sda4, sda5 sda6 sda7 sda8, and loops on this)

I managed to boot by shut it down a couple of seconds, then boot, if it fail, try again, thats the most anoying issue.

This notebook have an light sensor but android cant use it.

No Netflix :( , fast as a hell i got 36539 points on antutu!

This is working great, best than the win8 monster!

Im writing this on the notebook with android ;)

Installation goes smooth on my desktop PC, but it's not on my HP Pavilion 14-n038tx. On the first run (that dialog asking for language to use) I already get download manager, clock, etc. including google account manager stops. And the popup appears a couple of times. After I close one, another will come in a moment. Simply put, the first run stops after wifi configuration (which I skip because I don't have one at home) since the next AFAIR is google account connection. The screen is then black with only unusable back button at the bottom. I can't go further.

But it's an optimus system, the default graphic card is the integrated intel HD. NVIDIA will stay inactive unless explicitly asked to be active, which I don't expect to.

aha...you didn't mention that and the specs for the device shows the NVIDIA card.....

so guess your all set on that as long as it's not enabled....I thought an optimus system transitioned between integrated graphics and a discrete GPU automatically....as mostly
a battery saving feature....so how is it disabled through bios or something??

It was. BIOS setting is no longer part of the spec (as implemented by my notebook) so the switching can only be done at software level. The automatic switching based on load ATM only works on Windows. On Linux, the switching must be done manually by running programs through a specialized "runner" (from Bumblebee project) which scans for drawing requests and redirect them to the NVIDIA card. Without it, it's always Intel HD that runs the program.

nope missed those...only read your write up where you said...

"The screen is then black with only unusable back button at the bottom. I can't go"

and saw where someone said nvidia was involved and don't think android-x86 has ever supported nvidia....

maybe you should use debug mode and remove quiet and see what the kernel is telling you.....

maybe something like can't load nvidia driver....because it's not available in android-x86 kernel....

the attachment appear like stuff just isn't running correctly....

I think it should be the i965 driver that should be loaded and there maybe issues with it and mesa/etc.

I use SourceForge download for this release because
the googlecode doesn't offer download function anymore.

I haven't used SourceForge download for a long time.
It seems my settings was wrong so the file was hidden.
Now it should be fixed.
Sorry for that.

OK, kernel logs (without quiet) shows a lot, but nothing seems related
(everything runs too fast for my eyes to see). Instead, logcat who shows some
informative output. All the intents started received SIGILL signal with exact
same stacktrace. The top level cause is something in the logging library.

I want to, but taking pictures is cumbersome. Where are my other partitions mounted? I saw in the kernel message all found partitions are mounted

in debug mode I think log output is at /data/log*.txt.....or somewhere like that...

as for lsmod just pipe to a file...then post both to a msg here

you can look it all up...or pictures if you want sometimes that's all that people can get...

Hi,

This post is quite old, but I have some good news !
With the new Android x86 4.4-r2 release, (almost) everything works out of the box on Dell XPS 12 ! Multi touch screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, screen rotation... Congratulations to the Android x86 team, this release is so great that it can be used daily.
There is only one problem : when you tilt the screen (tablet mode), the touchpad is still enabled, so it interferes with the touchscreen (I thought it would be disabled at the hardware level, as the keyboard is). And the touchpad is regognized as a screen and not as a pointer.
