Howdy. Great firmware, thanks.

Back in February, I reported a smart error from one of the two Seagate
3TB ST3000DM001 drives in a DNS-323-A1, Alt-F 0.1RC4:
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/alt-f/vGu5CxmWtA0/hKfU23BiYeAJ

That appeared to be due to Seagate's proprietary firmware, there weren't
any usability issues, so I ran those disks until one started developing
bad sectors.

I replaced the drives with two new 3TB TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 and would get
occasional emails from Alt-F that ATA error count increased on one disk
or the other, or on both at the same time.

Looking at google, I see cabling implicated (this box has direct
connectors) and varying advice whether this error is indicative of a bad
drive. Last evening, it was warm and I got an email warning of high
temperature from the box sensor, set at 52C, which might be low. Taking
the 323 apart, there was some dust around the circuit board but the
front port was not clogged, as I saw reported by one user. I used
compressed air to blow out the box, aiming at the connectors, also, gave
the front port a less restrictive location on the desk, and got a minor
improvement in temperatures. At 11:43 PM, I got two emails reporting
ATA error count increased for each drive:

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], ATA error count increased from 3 to 5

Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], ATA error count increased from 22 to 24

Does someone know if this is a harmless error or otherwise? The DNS-323
is a pretty old device, I guess. The smart status reports from Alt-F
are below.

Thanks,
Rolf

I have 14 UDMA CRC errors from a 44909 power on hours (5 years 24/7) very old 80GB drive. No other drive of mine has such errors.
As both your drives are new, or they are rubbish, or too sensitive to electronic "noise" (modern computers "spread" less "noise") or your box is dying? Just guessing...

There are no new emails about CRC errors since.  Maybe there's a temperature component and/or something else.  The new Toshiba drives were very inexpensive, so some frailty would not be surprising.  Anyway, good to go for the time being.  Out of sight, out of mind. ;-)
