Hi,
Thanks for the very useful firmware. (Donations?)

I have a DNS-323 and Alt-F shows:

"The box is currently running Alt-F 0.1RC4 with kernel 3.10.32, and flashed with Alt-F-0.1RC4, kernel 3.10.32."
It has been working very nicely for some time.

I bought a couple of 3TB Seagate disks used.  As they have a lot of failure complaints that I see, I ran short and long tests on each, using SeaToolsDOS223ALL.ISO
from http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

All tests passed and I was even able to change one disk to its native capacity (3TB) from a smaller capacity that must have been imposed by the previous user's operating system.  One of the rather terse logs from this utility:

--------------- SeaTools for DOS v2.23 ---------------

Device 0 is Seagate Device ST3000DM001-1CH166  W1F1M1DC       On Intel ICH7
Max Native Address 5860533167
Device is 48 Bit Addressed - Number of LBAs 5860533167 ( 3000.593 GB )
This drive supports Security Features
SMART Is Supported And ENABLED
SMART Has NOT Been Tripped
DST Is Supported
Logging Feature Set Is Supported
POH 8263  Current Temp 31

Started Short DST  2/8/2015 @ 15:08.57
DST Completed Without Error
Short DST PASSED  2/8/2015 @ 15:10.01

and a shorter log from SeaTools Bootable, a beta program that installs to a usb key, has a nice gui, but fewer features, afaics, except for easy copy of logs to the key:

################################################################################
SeaTools Bootable v01.00.00
Model Number: ST3000DM001-1CH166
Serial Number: W1F1M1DC
Firmware: CC24
################################################################################
Long Generic Started: Fri Jan 23 03:42:11 2015
Long Generic PASS: Fri Jan 23 04:53:38 2015

So, I was encouraged and used gparted to copy my initial 2TB sda drive to the ST3000DM001.  I thought, since gparted copies everything, including UUID, this would be straightforward, making the new disk automatically known to all the machines/OS that access it.  I inserted it in the DNS-323 and it works as I expected, except there is a smart error sent in my email when the nas boots:

This message was generated by the smartd daemon running on:

   host name: DNS-323
   DNS domain: localnet

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], Failed SMART usage Attribute: 184 End-to-End_Error.

Device info:
ST3000DM001-1CH166, S/N:W1F1M1DC, WWN:5-000c50-05ce449e4, FW:CC24, 3.00 TB

For details see host's SYSLOG.

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
No additional messages about this problem will be sent.

When I ssh to Alt-F and run smartctl, I get:

# smartctl -H /dev/sda
smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [armv5tel-linux-3.10.32] (local build)

=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
184 End-to-End_Error 0x0032 099 099 099 Old_age Always FAILING_NOW 1

So, I took out the disk and ran the SeaToolsDOS223ALL on CD short test only, as that ought to reveal any such fault. It passed.

On the internet, I see some reports of this error, some of which seem to be valid, and some seemingly false positives corresponding to large disks in a nas. I tend to believe this is a false positive from Alt-F. WDYT?

Thanks,
Rolf

Here is their answer:What gave you that SMART error? It seems to me the
Linux diagnostic? Our SMART values are proprietary and do not conform to
the industrie standard. That is why 3rd party tools cannot correctly
read our drives.

Looks like, according to their own words, Seagate does not follow standards. Next time buy another brand
