Hi all,

I have a near new crow box that I've decided to sell.  An exceptionally wily and persistent squirrel has foiled my chances of ever getting past Stage 1, and I'd like to see someone else benefit from this device. I'm located in western Canada and am asking CAD$150 plus shipping for the box. It is currently attached to a thin piece of wood that I had clamped to another piece of wood attached to a pole.

Here are a few photos showing front, back and the electronic innards. I also took a video of the box in operation but can't seem to attach it here.

Cheers to all who are attempting this fun citizen science project!

Hi there!

I'd be interested.  But just out of curiosity: have you tried adding hot sauce (e.g., Tabasco) to the food you put in the basket?  Birds don't mind it, but mammals likely won't be able to tolerate it.  I'm trying to attract some corvids to my yard and have been doing that with shelled peanuts on the ground, and the squirrels won't go near it.  You might have to let it dry before putting it into the basket if your food basket is only lined (not waterproofed in any way).

Cheers,

Hi Katjo,

I didn't try hot sauce on the peanuts - that might work. However, I once had some "squirrel proof" suet that was spiked with hot stuff, and the squirrels here ate it anyway. I've fed peanuts on the ground to the jays for years, and of course the crows and squirrels have joined in for the munchies. Jays followed by crows were landing on the crow box after just a couple weeks. But as the squirrel outsmarted oil on the pole (that took a while - it was sort of fun watching him slide down), I moved the box further under the balcony above. At that point, the crows seemed to lose interest. I thought they'd eventually feel confident enough to approach again, but then the squirrel acquired the ability to make 90 degree turns mid-air off the balcony above and happily chow down. I live on the rainy west coast and needed to place the box under cover. Anyway, it was becoming stressful and other things have required my attention, so I'd prefer to pass the torch.

Cheers,
Kim

Here is how I rigged up my crowbox last year and I stopped having problems with squirrels.
Note: I have a platform feeder mounted next to it (to help attract crows. They were less skittish of it). The squirrels where not able to jump across either.

Hi, Kim,

I completely understand.  I'm still interested in the box.  If you could touch base with me via regular email, we can work out how much shipping will be and figure out how to get you paid. : )

Cheers,

This is kind of off-topic, but Kim's comment about the 90 degree mid-air turns of the squirrels reminded me of Mark Rober's videos about the Squirrel Obstacle Courses he set up.  If you haven't seen them, you might get a kick out of watching them:

Enjoy!

I'm interested if you would like to make one and sell it to me from your lesson learned.
