I'm looking for help and guidance. I saw about 9 ophthalmologist, neuro opthamologist, and retina specialist in New York and there is varying opinion as to what is going wrong with my vision. A couple of them think it is optic neuropathy or neurological related. I'm living back in Utah and will see a opthamologist here on the 4rth. I hope to find people who know what it feels like to be going blind and having so MANY other things going wrong with your eyes, some guidance on resources and hopefully some LDS people who can be of support. I'm 35 and since all this has started I now have a ton of squiggly lines in my vision as well. That is related to the condition somehow I'm sure and they are vitrous humour floaters, but apparently the brain regulates everything, so if something is wrong in the neurological it can effect many parts of the eyes. In all honesty, the one real hope has been the Lord.

Thanks, Aaron

I have RP. Going to all kinds of Doctors.  The best thing I can tell you is the Moran eye center to me is the best and you will get the best from them! The Blind Center here in Salt Lake city is really a great place to call and go to talk with them 801-323-4343. Prayer is great and there is a lot of things the church has and hasn’t done for the blind. On their Webb site they have materials that you can get.

Hope this helps.

Aaron;

I am going to offer some very specific actions for you to take. You have already been advised to contact the centre for the blind in Salt Lake City and that is good advice. Here are some others for your consideration.

At some point, if not already, your eyesight will start to prevent you from reading conventional print and computer screens. YOu need to start planning for that day now. There are a number of services to help with this. The National Library Service for the Blind, Bookshar.org and so on. You should start making the arrangements to activate these services.

Depending on what kind of computer you have you will want to start learning the screen reader for them. On MacOS and iOS (iPad and iPhone) that would be the built in VoiceOver screen reader. On windows it would be either the open source NVDA screen reader or one of several commercial screen readers sold.

You may wish the go to a rehabilitation centre to learn the skills of a blind person, independent mobility, Braille, and daily living skills so that you are able to live independently. I would strongly recommend this course of action.

Hi Aaron.

Can I ask if you're currently working, and if so, doing what? Do you have any trade school or college training? In what areas?

One thing to keep in mind is that continuing to lead an indipendent life is not something that blindness should interfere with. I'm totally blind, but I'm also a husband, gospel doctrine teacher, a Father, and I provide my family with a pretty comfortable living. I'm also not that unusual, I don't think.

Is blindness annoying? Very much so! But if you're willing to learn the skills of blindness, throw away your preconceptions of what a blind person ought to be able to do, and work a little harder than everyone else, blindness doesn't have to be the big deal everyone assumes it is.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If you have questions, feel free to pass those along to the list, or you are also welcome to contact me directly.

Hi Aaron!

I strongly agree with Greg and Aaron Cannon. I endorse their suggestions to
reach out and discover that there are many successful and happy blind people
who are really not so much different than you are.

Of course there are problems to solve, and obstacles to overcome, but there
are specific skills you can learn and techniques you can use to accomplish
the important things that every successful person must do to earn a living
and raise a family.

I am a bit more than twice your age. I have dealt with blindness since early
childhood. I have been married for 51 years and have 6 children, 21
grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way. I just
recently retired after 40 years college and university teaching.

In other words I have had a basic normal life. Yes, I have worked to learn
certain skills and acquire vital information, which has helped me to
discover methods of accomplishing important tasks without the use of sight.

There is hope. It can be done. You can do it!

Reach out, find blind people who have been down the road you wish to travel.
There is much to learn.

Warm regards,

Hey folks,

I am a member of the church in Texas and currently teach the temple preparation class and I’m the Webelos den leader in our ward.

I have been in the field of blindness for 35 years. I  In addition to teaching cane skills (O&M) and consulting, I am the Executive Director of a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Computers for the Blind (CFTB).  I am not posting this to try to promote or sell anything.  I just want to share it as a resource mainly to newly blinded persons or low vision folks or people who cannot afford new computers and the expensive assistive technology that makes them accessible.

Over the past 25 years (CFTB) has provided 9,000 computers to help persons who are blind or have low vision to increase their independent living, employability, and quality of life.  We receive donations of no longer needed desktop and laptop computers from businesses and individuals in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Our volunteers refurbish them, install the assistive technology they need and then we send ship them free matter for the blind to persons throughout the United States. See attached Fact Sheet if you are interested.  Many of the state agencies for the blind will pay our small processing free for someone who needs a computer and we often have grants for those on SSI (Supplemental Security Program).

We recently received a grant that will allow consumers to obtain Talking Typing Teacher for $10. That’s 90% off of retail. It is a talking typing tutorial that will teach you how to type without sight.  I have attached a press release if you are interested.

Lastly, We also have a large lending library of descriptive videos for the blind on DVD.

Hi aaron,

I am sherri and I live in Orlando, florida, but grew up in Utah and it still feels like home to me.

The advice you have been given thus far is really good. My advice is to pray that the Lord will guide you and lead you in a direction where you can find people who have positive attitudes about blindness and have made good adjustments. A good source for help is the National Federation of the blind (www.nfb.org).  I have been a member since 1979.  I have been blind all my life, but the Federation gave me a totally new and positive attitude about dealing with blindness on a daily basis.  The NFB has several training centers where you can get intensive help not only in the skills you need, but also developing a positive outlook and working through your vision loss.  The NFB of Colorado has one of these training centers.  You can find out more about these centers on the main website.

What I would say is that blindness, though it can present challenges, is the least of my day-to-day problems.  As a blind person, I have raised 5 children, 3 of my own and two step-children.  I am gainfully employed as a medical transcriptionist from home and I'm an active visiting teacher and visiting teaching supervisor in my ward, but have taught classes as well.  I even had the little Sunbeams and then the 4-year-olds, probably my biggest challenge as far as callings, but boy, did I learn a lot from them!

Please just keep in touch with people on the list and try to acquaint yourself with other blind people who are making it through the challenges and leading positive and full lives.

Sherri

Hi, Aaron:

My name is Rachel Grider, and I am a happy YSA at the moment. I have
been blind all my life and have held many callings since I joined the
Church eight years ago. I have also been through college and graduate
school.

The advice that you have been given so far is great, and I really
don't have much to add. I will echo Sherri in saying that the National
Federation of the Blind may be one of your best resources, and getting
into one of their training centers ASAP would be a great idea. Also,
please consider learning Braille, especially if you think you may lose
most or all of your vision.

Another thing you can do if you have a smart phone is download the
Gospel Library app. It has an option for you to listen to your
Scriptures and other Church materials being read to you. I suggest not
substituting audible books for reading books yourself, but it is
something you can do until you are able to learn alternative methods.

As it has already been said, blindness should not get in the way of
anything you would like to do; the biggest problem with blindness, in
my opinion, is the way we are viewed by society as a whole. When given
the proper training and materials, a blind person can be just as
competent as anyone else. Having said this, I also understand that
there is a grieving process when one experiences a change such as
losing one's sight. I am sure that it is very overwhelming for you
right now, and I will be praying for you. I think that you are doing
the right thing in reaching out, and you can always right to me
off-list if you have any questions or if you are just having a "bad
blind day."

Cheers!

Rachel

Hello everyone, I am extremely grateful for all your responses. I will read them more carefully tonight, even though it is not easy and I wonder how you guys all do it. It is an inspiration. I agree one hundred percent that God is the key in a trial like this, especially for like me. There is simply is no other way in my mind. Of course I will reach out and try to what I can, even though this period is devastating and disorienting to my state of mind. I'm really, really grateful for your guidance! I'm curious to what the blind community is like and what are the differences to non blind people. Don't be surprised if I don't phone a few of you.

Hey Adam, I called and left a message. You sound so positive and I understand this happened later on in life. Makes me way curious how, but feel free to call me at 315-398-9153. Hope to hear from you, Aaron

Any single ladies who might like and I them who are also living with visual problems I would love to meet, because I think that would be best thing for me right now.

I have to be attracted to her if anyone knows who might be interested in sparking up a friendship that could be more where I am able to benefit by gaining greater understanding to visual problems and having connections and her by talking to a guy who likes her (if this turned out to be the case) and can be a great conversationalist.

I am a person of faith so if you guys know anyone she too needs to be a believer.

I meant that sincerely if anyone knows someone interested in being friends. That would be helpful.
