Hello All,

Wondering if anyone has a set of new HED Belgium 650b (Rim Brake) 32H Rims they would like to sell me?

Best,

I’m sure you’re in good company here. I’m sorry to say I can’t help you, but I did score 2 (perhaps the last two) on eBay during the Great Black 650b Rim Brake Scare of 2017.

I would definitely check eBay. Also, if no one has pinged Compass about their plans for that rim that might make sense, too.

Ha! Yep, I believe you managed to obtain the very last existing set of rims out there and the Great Black 650b Rim Brake Famine is real and continuing well into 2018. I did reach out to Compass and they let me know that they have ordered more HED Belgium rims and they are expecting a new batch sometime this spring.

I was wondering if anyone has examined both versions of the Hed 650b rim - is the disc version truly incompatible with rim brakes ?

I.E. is the disc version just the same as the rim brake version, but without the machined sidewall ?

That sure would be a nice coincidence . . .

I have.

They are distinctly different rim designs and extrusions.

that is good news.  Been searching for a slightly wider black tubeless ready rim.

Good News! I've now received confirmation from the good folks at HED Cycling that the 32H HED Belgium 650b rim-brake rims are currently on a ship somewhere in the Pacific Ocean and will likely be arriving in 3-4 weeks.

So, knowing this to be true, does anybody happen to have a pair of rims that they'd be willing to part with now?

That is good to hear!  The way things are in rim-brake-650B-land, I figured they were extinct.

Anyone happen to have any update on the rim brake 650b Belgium rims?  I'm delaying a wheelbuild in anticipation but hoping I don't have to wait much longer.

Does anyone know if drillings other than 32° are available? Thanks.

Thanks Brian, good to know. Now if only they had 20° & 24° so I could re-use my Bontrager hubs...

Other than the aero benefit, is there any advantage to the HED over the Pacenti Brevet? I feel like this has been discussed somewhere but I don't remember where.

The HED rim are wider for those of us who run 48-52mm tires.

And they're black, so will match some bikes better. The spoke holes are centre drilled too, which makes it easier to build with lacing patterns like 16:8, not really an issue with 650b where there aren't any 24° rims to be had.

They're a bit deeper too, so probably a tad more aero, and more likely to be available outside the US, though maybe not by much.

A rim with a triangular cross-section is generally stiffer. If I was building an 11 speed wheel or something with a lot of dish, I would use the HED.

There are a lot of qualifiers to the first statement. But that has been my experience, with a few exceptions.

As others have pointed out, stiffer doesn’t necessarily mean stronger.

+1

FWIW, I found my rear PL23 on a 130mm Shimano 10 speed hub didn't cope well with baggage handlers; I'd imagine the Brevet would be similar. For a front wheel or with less dish things will be better, but with more dish the wider, deeper Belgium+ ought to be both stiffer and stronger. Maybe not a big deal if you won't be flying with the bike, but if you are...

I think my "dream" rear rim would be a 650B version of the Pacenti Forza Rear.  Off-center spoke drilling for better tension balance, deep profile for stiffness/minor aero benefit, all of the bugs from the SL23 worked out... but man, that's a niche of a niche.  My SL23s are still treating me well so I have no real complaints.  :^)
