Hey,

Mike Newman told me that there was a delay/echo on the headphones from the mics in studio A. Can anyone confirm this? I’d fixed that issue before by making sure the clocks were set correctly but I’m not sure why it would revert.

Thanks
Max

Thanks for bringing this up, Max.

Just want to clarify that it’s only when headphones are worn and (one of the) mics are on. I only used / experienced it with mics 1 and 4.

It sounds like a repetitive echo, kinda.
Thanks for looking into it.

Is it an echo or a delay?

I guess it sounds more like a doubling effect than an echo — just a bit out of sync (if that makes sense)?

Sue Edelman heard it as well (she was on after me on Saturday). I think she would characterize it similarly.

There are two different effects that I’ve noticed:

1) latency/delay in which there is a noticeable gap between when you make a sound and when you hear it. It is extremely difficult, verging on impossible, to talk when this happens because you’ll be halfway through the next word hearing the word you just said, which is very disorienting.

2) a weird sound quality doubling thing or echo - in which the audio is in sync but has an odd timbre/slight doubling as you said. This does not affect your ability to form sentences but your voice sounds odd. I noticed this when we first switched into studio C but it resolved itself, iirc. From what I remember, this isn’t noticeable over the air.

Important to check: are the monitors and headphones set to Program 1 or External 1? If set to External 1, some level of delay might be expected.

If it’s issue 1, that’s a big problem. If it’s problem 2, we can work through it and I can check wiring to see if I can find an issue. If it’s something else entirely, as long as it’s not problem 1, we’ll work through it.

Should people continue to use C while this is resolved?

One cause of perceived slight delays/echos in C was that the studio is on program while the sound out in the record library was on external, and so delayed. Turning the library monitors down or closing the studio door resolved that particular issue. Not saying it was your problem, just that I saw it for other DJs.

The sound insulation in A is good enough that wouldn’t be a problem if the door is closed.

I dont see any reason to dictate what other people do- if the dj on air feels more comfortable in studio C, they should broadcast from there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just wanted to know if it’s issue 1 or 2, as described previously.

I asked Mariah to check things out during her show — she said everything is working smoothly!

Mike, my best guess is that the headphones were feeding from external 1, not program 1. Or the DJ headphones just sound a little funky.

Thx Max, makes sense. I’ll double check the headphone source when I’m there next weekend.
