Dear all,

As you may be aware, Principal Scientist Gnana Bharathi who was retained as a librarian in Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Adyar, Chennai since 2007 after his transfer to CLRI Chennai due to spinal cord injury got his rightful transfer Office Memorandum to the Environment Department as Principal Scientist after a protest by the disability activists yesterday.

Earlier Mr.Bharathi filed a sequence of grievances with CLRI, CSIR, CIC, CCPD etc but of no use. Disability Legislation Unit of Vidya Sagar wrote to the State Commissioner for Persons with disabilities, Secretary, Department of the Welfare of Differently abled persons, Director, CLRI and followed up with their offices early June 2016. The matter was also taken up in the Media, which could be accessed in the following links and attachment 1:

As CLRI did not take any effective action in Mr.Bharathi's case even after the pressure from the Disability Sector, Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and the media, Bharathi took up a peaceful protest at the gate of CLRI, Chennai on 27.6.16. Disability Rights Alliance, December 3 Movement, Tamil Nadu Federation for Physically Handicapped Associations and Spinal Injured Persons Association joined the protest and had dialogues with CLRI authorities and finally the Director Mr.Chandra Sekaran. Mr.Chandrasekaran was reluctant to issue a transfer order in the beginning. As the protesters were determined to sit on a non stop demonstration in CLRI campus, Mr.Chandrasekaran issued an office memorandum in the afternoon, transferring Gnana Bharathi to Environment Department enabling him to proceed with his PhD and research in Environmental Science.

News clips on the protest and issue of Office Memorandum could be accessed in the following links & attachments.

Mr.Bharathi had joined the Environment Department at CLRI on 28th June 2016, the very next day of protest and is working effectively from his new designation and department responsibilities.

Thanks & Regards

Smitha
