Hello Dennis and Everyone,
Dennis I completely agree with your sentiment.
I was completely underwhelmed, at best, and absolutely disappointed, at worst, with iPhone release this time around.
I was hoping for some form of TouchID but, not gonna happen.
Removing the SIM tray on the US models is somewhat concerning as A T & T Wireless has had some problems with Activating and maintaining the account settings when eSim is activated. This is according to several articles I've read, recently.
I just don't know, I just don't know.
I have been trying to get used to FaceID via iPhone 11 but am definitely going to miss Touch ID.
Be that as it may, I plan to get an iPhone 14 Pro Max; not in the first couple of months; figure I'll give carriers and Apple time to break in the new models (smile), specifically eSIM activation but I am on the path to iPhone 14.

The phones were terrible in my opinion they offered nothing. Hopefully they will offer touch ID somewhere on all phones if they do that and the USBC than I might get one but If they do little to nothing like they did this year I think a lot of people won't upgrade.

You'd be hard pressed to list 3 good reasons why somebody should upgrade from an iPhone 13 to a 14 or even from an 11 or 12 to a 14.
I am actually quite underwhelmed with this years phones especially the regular models which still have the A15 chip just like the 13 models from last year. They say they improved the camera a bit and the front camera now has auto focus so I guess if you are a selfie obsessed person that may be one good reason. The emergency SOS via satellite is definitely a feature and a good reason for people who go off the grid a lot and then that is about it.
I have a regular iPhone 11 which works great and for things like doing OCR, recognizing currency or using other Seeing AI features I doubt you would be able to notice an improvement between it and the iPhone 14 or even iPhone 14 Pro. For sighted people who love taking tons of photos and are really into good photography the 14 Pro definitely would be a great option, if you really want to take advantage of door detection and maybe other features in various apps which require the LiDAR sensor then you have also a very good reason for the 14 Pro or Pro Max, but only if you don't already have a 12 Pro/Pro Max or 13 Pro/Pro Max which already have the LiDAR sensor as well.
I had my call from Telus, my provider in Canada today and I could have upgraded to an iPhone 14 Pro 128 Gb for $30/month over 24 months and then I would have to give the phone back to them or buy out that option for $560. This means that over 2 years I would have paid $720 and if I then wanted to keep the phone I'd have to buy it out for $560 so in total I would pay $1,280. I can go to the Apple Store and buy a new iPhone 14 Pro 128 Gb in Canada for $1,399 so I guess doing the deal with Telus may save me $100 or $120, but not a huge difference. AS for trade-in, Telus said they would give me $200 for my iPhone 11 64 Gb which is laughable because I know I could easily get $500 for it if I put it up for sale now privately.
So I will just wait and see what happens for a while, if the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro phones aren't accepted as much as Apple may hope they are you may soon find stores, carriers and maybe even Apple offering extra deals and Black Friday is only just over 2 months off. I am of course somewhat tempted to get an iPhone 14 Pro because I like the idea of the MagSafe charging where a slight bump or pull on the Earpods wouldn't dislodge the phone from its charging position on the wireless charging pad and you can get external batteries like that new Anker 622 MagGo which has 5,000 Mah capacity and it snaps onto the back of the phone without covering the camera opening, but I'll just wait a bit longer. Once the new phones are regularly available they may even be sold by my credit card rewards program and I have plenty of points and if not then I know for sure they have $500 Apple Store or Best Buy gift cards which I could order and then use to buy one. I know for sure that if I had a MagSafe capable phone like a 12 or 13 series phone I'd have 0 incentive to get a 14.

As far as I know, LIDAR is still only on the pro and pro max models.
One could call Apple to double check, but I was surprised they didn't mention anything about it especially with the door detection feature that is apparently coming in iOS 16, but of course, Wednesday's presentation was focused on hardware, not software.

When I purchased an iPhone without Touch I.D, I had some difficulty getting it to work reliably. Over a fairly short period of time, it became easier. While I have not tracked my success rate with Face I.,D, I would say that it works a little over 80 percent of the time. While I would prefer Touch I.D, using Face I.D has not been a show stopper. I don't know how often you have tried it, but as you use it regularly, your success with using it will improve. I don't know if Touch I.D will ever return, so I believe moving on is the best approach.

I agree with whoever it was that said when they first got a phone with Face ID, it was a little bit tricky. But I’ve had my 10 R now for some time, and Face ID works just as reliably as touch ID. I have an old 7+ with touch ID. And I have to use my pass code on that just about as often as I do on the 10r. I think people make a big deal out of it because it’s new and they think it’s hard if you’re blind. It isn’t. It does take getting used to, but so do those gestures where you have to slide up from the bottom or down from the top. Try it. Put your toe in the water, and you’ll find out it’s not that big of a deal.

I've been using touch ID since I got my iPhone 11. I don't think it's new, and I don't think it's hard to use as a blind person, but I do prefer touch ID. I find it more reliable for me. I also find touch ID to be more convenient. There are just times I want to unlock my phone without having to put it in front of my face. Sometimes blind people can just prefer a feature without it having to be all about their blindness or their unwillingness to learn something new.

I assume you mean Face ID, since you referred to your iPhone 11. I agree that there are times when touch ID is more convenient, like when you have your phone in your pocket. Still, and my phone is an older one, I still find that there are enough times where touch ID doesn’t work that it really isn’t that much more convenient for me. 7+ versus 10 hour, so none of my phones is exactly new. All I’m saying is that people shouldn’t be afraid of face ID. Setting it up can be a bit challenging, although I’ve seen enough descriptions on how to do it that it just isn’t that big of a deal in my view. I would like touch ID but I wouldn’t let its absence stop me from getting a new phone if I thought I needed one. And having experienced touch ID on a Samsung phone, with it in the screen sensor, I will say that Face ID beats heck out of trying to do touch ID where there isn’t a specific place where you know to put your finger, such as you have with the home button on an older iPhone or on the iPad mini, where the sensor is in the power button. Under screen touch ID is worse than Face ID. At least it is in my experience. Less reliable and slower.

I actually believe fingerprint unlock to be more secure than facial IDespecially for a blind person anyway. If a theif should slip our phone out of our pocket, purse etc or grab our phone from our hand, they could lock the phone, turn the phone back on & point the camera at our face all within 15sec. It would take most people half this time to realize what just happened & to react. But oh well, facial ID is what Apple "thinks" to be more secure.

I personally like both touch ID and face ID. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Overall, I lean more toward liking touch ID now just because I don't like having to put the phone in front of my face every single time I want to unlock and interact with it. I just wish they would give us both, like some android phones do.

To be quite honest, I've not had any real problems with Face ID; I just do not like it as much as Touch ID.
On my 11, I use the Tap Back feature to quickly return to the home screen but, again, I just do not like it as much as I like Touch ID.
On my beloved Galaxy, the in-screen Touch ID / Home Button work so well that I cannot understand why Apple will not implement it on its flagship devices.
I use Apple Pay almost every time I buy something in a store and Face ID just feels weird when it comes to authenticating purchases.
In all fairness, however, I also use my Apple Watch for Apple Pay and it works flawlessly so ...
In the end, it just comes down to personal preference, perhaps nothing more.
It's too bad that Apple did not release iPhone Ultra with Touch ID, Face ID and a headphone jack, eh? (big smile)

Theft is a real risk to those of us who are blind or low vision.
Not long ago, I was sitting on a couch next to a friend of mine and she picked up my 11 and pointed it at my face and unlocked my phone because she wanted to make a quick check of the weather; I saw her lift up the phone but, thinking it was my beloved 8 Plus, I forgot that she could unlock the device by simply pointing it towards me.
It was truly unsettling and I got angry, to say the least.
I remember thinking, "what if I had not had enough vision to see her pick up my phone?" Wow!
I just don't like Face ID!!!!!

My advice to those who use facial ID, use screen curtain, because the gesture to get to control center is the same for those who are sighted. If the control center can be accessed the brightness can be adjusted, so setting brightness to zero isn't much of a deterrent for the theif who snatches the phone out of your hand or slips it out of a pocket or purse etc.

Yeah, it was pretty icky of her. Trust me, she won’t be doing it again.
I use my 11 strictly as a test device. I do not have any personal info stored on the phone. In fact, even the Apple ID I use for it is for testing only. This is why it was laying on the coffee table.
When she picked it up, however, for some reason, I thought it had Touch ID as does both my beloved 8 Plus and Galaxy so did not immediately react. This is to say, it took me about 5 seconds to realize that she has unlocked the phone for I could see that there was some kind of app running on the phone.
I NEVER, EVER leave my beloved 8 Plus or my beloved Galaxy anywhere; this is to say that, when out and about, they are always on my person.
It was, however, a wake-up call for me to realize that those of us who are blind or low vision mut constantly remain vigilant when out and about; even among acquaintances.
I am so glad I shared this with you all. Hearing the various feedback has made me feel better about the entire incident.

I actually believe fingerprint unlock to be more secure than facial IDespecially for a blind person anyway. If a theif should slip our phone out of our pocket, purse etc or grab our phone from our hand, they could lock the phone, turn the phone back on & point the camera at our face all within 15sec. It would take most people half this time to realize what just happened & to react. But oh well, facial ID is what Apple "thinks" to be more secure.

I've been using touch ID since I got my iPhone 11. I don't think it's new, and I don't think it's hard to use as a blind person, but I do prefer touch ID. I find it more reliable for me. I also find touch ID to be more convenient. There are just times I want to unlock my phone without having to put it in front of my face. Sometimes blind people can just prefer a feature without it having to be all about their blindness or their unwillingness to learn something new.

I agree with whoever it was that said when they first got a phone with Face ID, it was a little bit tricky. But I’ve had my 10 R now for some time, and Face ID works just as reliably as touch ID. I have an old 7+ with touch ID. And I have to use my pass code on that just about as often as I do on the 10r. I think people make a big deal out of it because it’s new and they think it’s hard if you’re blind. It isn’t. It does take getting used to, but so do those gestures where you have to slide up from the bottom or down from the top. Try it. Put your toe in the water, and you’ll find out it’s not that big of a deal.

Yeah, it was pretty icky of her. Trust me, she won’t be doing it again.
I use my 11 strictly as a test device. I do not have any personal info stored on the phone. In fact, even the Apple ID I use for it is for testing only. This is why it was laying on the coffee table.
When she picked it up, however, for some reason, I thought it had Touch ID as does both my beloved 8 Plus and Galaxy so did not immediately react. This is to say, it took me about 5 seconds to realize that she has unlocked the phone for I could see that there was some kind of app running on the phone.
I NEVER, EVER leave my beloved 8 Plus or my beloved Galaxy anywhere; this is to say that, when out and about, they are always on my person.
It was, however, a wake-up call for me to realize that those of us who are blind or low vision mut constantly remain vigilant when out and about; even among acquaintances.
I am so glad I shared this with you all. Hearing the various feedback has made me feel better about the entire incident.

Theft is a real risk to those of us who are blind or low vision.
Not long ago, I was sitting on a couch next to a friend of mine and she picked up my 11 and pointed it at my face and unlocked my phone because she wanted to make a quick check of the weather; I saw her lift up the phone but, thinking it was my beloved 8 Plus, I forgot that she could unlock the device by simply pointing it towards me.
It was truly unsettling and I got angry, to say the least.
I remember thinking, "what if I had not had enough vision to see her pick up my phone?" Wow!

I actually believe fingerprint unlock to be more secure than facial IDespecially for a blind person anyway. If a theif should slip our phone out of our pocket, purse etc or grab our phone from our hand, they could lock the phone, turn the phone back on & point the camera at our face all within 15sec. It would take most people half this time to realize what just happened & to react. But oh well, facial ID is what Apple "thinks" to be more secure.

I've been using touch ID since I got my iPhone 11. I don't think it's new, and I don't think it's hard to use as a blind person, but I do prefer touch ID. I find it more reliable for me. I also find touch ID to be more convenient. There are just times I want to unlock my phone without having to put it in front of my face. Sometimes blind people can just prefer a feature without it having to be all about their blindness or their unwillingness to learn something new.

I agree with whoever it was that said when they first got a phone with Face ID, it was a little bit tricky. But I’ve had my 10 R now for some time, and Face ID works just as reliably as touch ID. I have an old 7+ with touch ID. And I have to use my pass code on that just about as often as I do on the 10r. I think people make a big deal out of it because it’s new and they think it’s hard if you’re blind. It isn’t. It does take getting used to, but so do those gestures where you have to slide up from the bottom or down from the top. Try it. Put your toe in the water, and you’ll find out it’s not that big of a deal.

I did not realize that such a thing was even possible.
I will enable the feature on all of my devices.

Why didn't she use her own phone?
My phone makes a sound when it unlocks, I have it set as one of the haptic options I'd be having a serious talk with your friend about boundaries, or I'd make sure I had stuff on the phone that would embarrass her.
Really though, this is a boundary issue not a phone issue.

You have a sound play whenever you unlock your phone?
I did not realize that such a thing was even possible.
I will enable the feature on all of my devices.
I'm assuming one can enable unlock sound feedback in VoiceOver settings? Wow! What a wonderful idea.

My phone makes a sound when it unlocks, I have it set as one of the haptic options I'd be having a serious talk with your friend about boundaries, or I'd make sure I had stuff on the phone that would embarrass her.
Really though, this is a boundary issue not a phone issue.
