Hi!
So in the battery health thread, some people discussed getting a new iphone battery. So I was wondering, how do you change an iphone's battery? Do you have to send it away to apple, or can i somehow buy a replacement battery and replace it myself?

You do not want to try replacing it yourself.

Check in your city/town if there are places that will do cell phone battery replacement.  Batteries Plus is a national chain and some of their locations will do it.

There are smaller shops that can do that as well.

You want to check their ratings of course to make sure they have a positive rating by their customers.

Or, of course, have Apple do it.  If you don’t have an Apple store near you, you would have to send it in, but of course, call them first and make arrangements.

You probably will want to check prices and availability to compare.

Your local Apple Store: or, if you can find a mobile phone repair shopt near you, and if they stock the relevant iPhone battery, they will replace your old battery.

I went to best buy which is apple certified and had my iPhone 8
battery replaced. They only had one left in stock which was very
lucky for me. I wouldn't like to send my phone to apple if I didn't
have to.

Well, there is a self replacement program for iPhone batteries, but if my memory serves me correctly, you get about 100 pounds (weight not UK Currency) of tools that are required to do it as a loan.
There was a lot of press about this about 6 months ago.

Best wishes,

Wow, That's crazy. I definitely won't be trying to replace it myself.  Why does it have to be so complicated.  It makes me a bit nostalgic for my non-smart phones where you could just pop open the back and easily replace the battery.
Thank you all so much for the info.
Hopefully they will still have iphone 8 batteries when I'm ready to replace mine.  The battery health says its running at 80 percent which still gives me several hours of use before it runs down.  I hope to get a bit more milage out of my phone before upgrading, because these devices are crazy expensive lol.

The longer you wait, the less likelihood you will find an iPhone 8 battery.

I’d check since you are right on the cusp of where they recommend replacing the battery, and $50 or so is a lot better than several hundred for a new phone.

I got the battery for my iPhone six replaced at the Apple store for about $50. You are right Richard it is better to pay $50 to replace the battery and hundreds of dollars for a new iPhone. That is why I kept my iPhone 6 going as long as I did.

I agree. Those with iPhone 8 phones should really make sure they can
still get a battery if needed. The battery life of my iPhone 13 pro
max is great. If it weren't for all the bard books on my iPhone 8, I
wouldn't worry about my old phone at all. Although with a 91% battery
health, I think my iPhone 8 is still doing pretty good.

I recommend apple care if you can afford it. I have it for both my
iPhones. I didn't have to pay anything to have my iPhone 8 battery
replaced.
