Dave, Chela, et al:

The last time I explored Duo Lingo, there were a great deal of photos that one had to name in order to begin the learning process.

For example, in order to practice vocabulary, the app would display a grid of photos, and the student had to match a word with the photo. Is this no longer a problem?

Hello,

I am currently using the Duo Lingo app to study some French. I find it totally accessible so far. The app does have a subscription version that will remove ads and some other usage limits but I am not certain of the cost as I am just working with the free part of the app. The app does have some "listen and speak" capabilities along with introducing reading, writing, and grammar. It is fun and effective.

I have also used the Pimsleur language learning app. This app teaches conversational languages and does not get into reading and writing and grammar very much. It is an audio based system, listen and repeat. It is a subscription app asking $18.xx per month for a 3-language option or $25 per month cost for full access to all 51 languages they support. I have found the app fully accessible so far and I have used the Pimsleur courses in the past to pick up a basic intro to languages for foreign countries that I have visited. For me, this system has been very successful.

Good luck learning a language and have fun with it.

Try Duolingo you can use it on the web duolingo.com or on the appstore you can find it and it's very accessible and has the languages you are interested in. I love the app and I use it on a regular basis it’s like playing a game except you’re learning a lot.

Hello everyone,

I can't remember if this was recently asked here, or not. If so, I do apologize. I know I saw similar questions somewhere.

Anyway, I am looking for an accessible App, to help me possibly learn a new language. I am most interested in learning Chinese, Spanish, and maybe one other as well. I don't know how possible any of this is. But I just really want to try it, rather or not it works out.

I want an App where the learning is done through interaction. Not just studying, or trying to do a lot of memorizing.

Also, I don't mind purchasing an App. Or paying to learn the languages. But I would like the App to be quite accessible, and easy to use, if possible.

What do you all think? Does what I am looking for, even exist?

Thank you,

Terri

Hello Leo,

I find your comments intriguing and, quite frankly, enlightening.

Not to get too far off-point, I want to ask you if you find apps like Duo Lingo, accessible and can one truly learn a language, in your opinion using such apps? If not, what do you recommend?

With regard to my recent experimentation with Duo Lingo, so far, I am not finding the app accessible.

So, after opening the app, I did not create an account; at least not yet. Perhaps this may have something to do with my interface experience.

Because I have a passing acquaintance with the language, I selected Spanish as my free language of choice.

What I am presented with is a grid of photos upon which I can tap to hear the Spanish word for that particular photo, a man, a woman, a chair, etc.

As I said, my limited interface choices may have something to do with the fact that I am using the app without providing an email address. Or, perhaps there is a setting I have yet to discover that would make the interface work as Chela and Dave have described.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Hello Terri,
Even though I see that other listers have already made suggestions, I would like to say something. Indeed, what you’re looking for is called gaming in the language-learning strategies of recent theoretical accounts. On the other hand, decontextualized memorization and traditional approaches on language learning are not sufficiently enough effective to reach competence in any given spoken language. That only works for archeologists or linguists researching on dead languages.
My suggestion is trying a holistic approach in which you can carry out different activities related to the four basic skills in any given language. Gaming is pretty good, but it is just a small part of the learning process. Learning a language as an adult is a complex process that requires getting out of one’s comfort zone. However, this doesn’t mean that it should be boring or nerve-wracking. In short, I would suggest not letting false expectations entice you.

Best,
Leo Bado

Hey Mark,

I realize I was not the intended person from whom you were hoping to hear, but I've been using Duolingo exclusively and 99% successfully from an assistive technological standpoint. I started with the app on my previous phone, a Samsung. Then when I was gifted an iPad Mini 6th Edition back in November, I put the app on that as well. Then following this, when I upgraded from my old Samsung to my new iPhone 13 ProMax, I put the app on this newest device. I've had no issues with using the app to successfully learn my language of choice, Spanish as well. I also did pay for the annual subscription to the app, so perhaps that does have something to do with this, I'm not entirely sure.

The only thing I would say about the app is that when you're given the option/opportunity to do a beat-the-clock activity, or timed activity in other words, I don't get those done as fast as say someone with sight might do. I could probably do better with these given enough time, patience, and practice. We'll see what happens when my almost-five-year-old daughter goes to kindergarten in the Fall. LOL!
