to Video DownloadHelper Q&A
I only  ever use the "Video DownloadHelper" to download streaming videos and never anything else. I normally have it setup in a way that I use the "Browser" instead of the "Companion Application" but when using the "Browser" all the files downloaded go straight into the "Downloads" folder and I don't want to have the "Downloads" folder becoming a mess with all different kinds of file types over and over again and then needing to clean them up after every download. So I did a little tinkering around just to see what would work best for me.

So here is what I have done. I have made the "Video DownloadHelper" setup like this. I use the companion application the main downloader and then once the video is done downloading it gets placed inside a folder I made called "Downloaded Videos" instead of "dwhelper" folder on the laptop. So now when I download a video I click the video to start the streaming and then I click the "Video DownloadHelper" icon and then start the downloading. But here is thew issue with it when I start the download I need to click the addon each time and then click the blue dot just to check on the downloading process. Is there a way to keep it with these settings and still keep a eye on the download process and not need to keep clicking on the addon icon each time I want to see how far things have gotten. When I use the browser to download I can see the downloads icon showing how far the downloads are and when there finished it changes back to the arrow and not the downloading icon.

I want to be able to know when a video is finished downloading I don't like the popup notifications and hope that is not the only option for me currently.

Dose anyone know how to keep a eye on the downloading videos without needing to click the icon for the addon every single time.

You are better off using the companion app, there are times where you will end up with a file that does not seek well when the browsers inbuilt downloader is used, only happens rarely but it has happened with some of my downloads and when the companion app is used the file seeks properly.

At this time the VDH addon program's popups have no control and to check on progress you only have one option.

There is a setting on the General tab of the Firefox settings -- Firefox, not VDH --
called Downloads. You have to page down about 3 screenloads to find it. It lets you
specify a target directory for downloads. There is also a checkbox for Always ask you
where to save files. I believe that Firefox setting controls what happens when you use
Browser as your Download processor in VDH. Not entirely sure about that but I think
that's how it works. You could experiment with that & report back if that works the way
I'm saying. I have to echo Jaymo's sentiment though. The CoApp is really the best way
to use VDH. As you have determined, the CoApp allows you to specify any directory on
your system as the target of each download, whereas letting the browser manage downloads
does not.

I gather you have found the VDH setting for turning off the popup notification. It's
near the top of the Appearance tab of VDH settings. It's a checkbox that is checked by
default. You can always uncheck it. I don't mind the notifications but I say to each
her own.

As for active status, there's nothing for it but to click on the blue dot. VDH is far
more mouse intensive than I'd like but I don't see any movement toward making it possible
to operate VDH exclusively from the keyboard. When I was growing up, computers didn't
have mice. Hell, when I was growing up, computers didn't have monitors, only punch cards
& paper printouts. I don't think I've ever lost my aversion to the mouse. I find it
clumsy, which makes it both slow & inaccurate as an input device. The keyboard is my
preferred way of interacting with a computer, but sadly, most PC software simply needs a
mouse for proper operation. VDH is particularly mouse dependent. I've asked for the
status menu to be transformed into a browser tab or separate window, similar to the VDH
setting on the Appearance tab for File Dialog. I've seen no movement on that.

What are you talking about when you say there's a download icon that changes back to an
arrow. Can you post a couple of screenshots of that?

You could keep track of downloads in the Resource Monitor on the Network tab. That won't
tell you percentage complete & time remaining, but it will tell you how fast downloads
are proceeding & whether they have stopped. Besides, the percentage & time remaining in
the VDH status menu are calculated in this weird way that means those numbers are not
entirely accurate. In fact, they're pretty much bogus until your download reaches 100%.
It's always right at that point. Michel explained it to me somewhere in this forum. You
might find it if you look hard enough. It was rather a while ago & if I recall
correctly, the main topic of the thread was not the status menu, so good luck finding it.
So you might use Resource Monitor.

Jaymo, when you say "not seek well," what are you talking about? The way you can skip
around within the file when you're playing it back in VLC? I'd like to see some examples
of that.

And please learn & follow the advice given here:
