The startling rise in suicides in Nigeria puzzles many.

I would like to share some of my own ways of taking care of my mind.

Prayer is one.

Prayer of surrender and thanksgiving are my favourites.

Giving thanks for the fact of existence and the opportunities it presents.

Surrendering challenging situation and one's entire life to the creator and sustainer of the cosmos.

The one with no name but who can accommodate all names.

This can help the mind relax, enabling new insights and even opportunities emerge in ways that I understand as miraculous though not mysterious since their causes are obvious but not inevitable.

Another is meditation.

My favorite is sitting quietly, with my attention turned inward, looking into myself with the eyes of my mind.

Just looking and listening. Thoughts come and go.

I include among meditation admiring works of art and going for walks at least once a day. As I walk, I try to pay attention to my environment, enjoy its colours, its qualities of all kinds, along with, in places where I wont attract attention, enjoying the beauty and expanse of the sky and the stars.

Some of my best ideas come from meditation, which I consider as important as being able to read and write or think logically.

Its the first thing I do in the morning. At times, simply in terms of waking up slowly with my eyes closed, enjoying reemergence into awareness from the oblivion of sleep.

Finally, cultivating a sense of ultimate purpose is priceless for me. I characterize this in terms of the definition of 'vocation' by Webster's Third New Advanced Dictionary of the English Language, 1966, " The orientation of a person's life and work in terms of their ultimate sense of mission."

Family, friendship and love are priceless and can make a lot of difference, but its also vital to cultivate one's inner resources.

Thank you for your insights. I have no doubt that meditation is powerful. Let me add one more very significant
avenue. I discovered it while seeking to preempt Osteoporosis, an ailment that runs in my family.  I was told that
weight  lifting was a good option so
I got  into it at my local gym and the rest is history. I  have since come across testimonies that  claim that it is also useful in cases of depression as well.

By the way, don’t think that women who lift weights grow beards. Afterall
men who cook  don’t  develop v......

Female weightlifters are simply less prone to age -related bone loss,  and develop both the body and mind.

thanks Gloria.

your response crystallizes my observations about loss of muscle tautness as one grows older, even though the biological issue you are discussing is different.

i shall work towards prioritizing gym membership for my family and i, as i have been thinking about doing for some time.

Weight lifting takes time and patience or you will get body injuries and hate it
forever. Dead lift is for me the most challenging and I never ventured beyond 90 Ib’s on each side of the iron bar. I started with 25 pounds and did that for years.
Shoulder bar half squat is my thing.Started with 25 pounds on each side of the bar. After 25 years and almost daily
practice , I proudly do 180 pounds on each side. Bye bye osteoporosis - hopefully.
You cannot predict the future.

Our Egyptian precursors developed many sports, among them lifting, rowing, acrobatics,
Javelin throwing, a form of hockey, boxing etc . The originators of basketball, football and most ball games are the Native Americans, however. Some argue that the ancient Egyptians had big Game competitions .........
We need a volume on African Indigenous sports. I am too busy in the gym to write it, alas.
