Hi folks
On the JOAL flights we have been using a pi camera and the results are encouraging. However we would like to improve our image quality and would be interested in what measures others are taking such as filters and post processing.
Is it worth using a circular polarizer for instance? My understanding is that there is no need to use a UV filter on a digital camera. And are you using auto settings or using manual?
And any photoshop tips?
Any experience would be much appreciated.

A bit of gamma helps, but I think you're using my sample processing script for PITS which does that anyway. Maybe step that up a bit from 0.8 to 0.7.

Maybe start with a camera based on the 8Mp IMX219 or 12Mp IMX477 Sony sensors - these seem a step up from the old 5Mp Omnivision OV5647 sensor (or rather whatever seems to purport to be a OV5647 these days).

There's also the new 12Mp Pi camera though it's quite a bit heavier depending on the choice of lens.

Ah yes, right you are :)
It's a big improvement over the smaller cameras with their plastic lenses.

For image quality there is no substitute for sensor size, bit depth and a good lens.

On a tangent, with PITS is there any way to have multiple cameras and then switch between them?
I was thinking of multiple USB cams for instance and then switching between them on different USB ports.
I recall you can switch the camera feed for PITS from the Pi cam to a USB cam in the config file but can you do that on the fly in flight?

By writing your own camera script. The default on is a shell script but it can be replaced with another or Python or anything you like. I did this once with 3 Pi cams connected to 3 Pis all networked together.

It's called "camera" and is in /home/pi/pits/tracker/
