UoPeople ACM Student Chapter - Planning and Discussion Group

As I have mentioned in a previous thread, it's time we start putting together what we have come together for.

I, as chair, will be drafting the general action plan and will append yours depending on the tasks you have been assigned.

John Mburu, as Head of External Affairs, will write down what he intends to do to get more members in and how we could reach out to other entities when we need to. We've discussed about reaching out to the university for another announcement and we didn't exactly finish that discussion. You decide what you want to do with that.

Angela, as treasurer, will draft a fundraising plan. This is so more of our peers from the UoPeople who can afford official membership with the ACM can register and enjoy the benefits that membership offers just as those who can. After all, the UoPeople is aiming for a democratization of higher education. Our Student Chapter should have fair membership access as well.

Also, as Webmaster, you will have to create a mock-up of our website and how we will set it up. If you can. I'll be working on it as well, just in case. Also, we'll need to be able to set up and IRC channel for meetings. Just like the website, I'll be looking it up. But if you find a way to do it faster than I could, that would be better.

Finally, Rafael, as head of committee on activities, will have to write about the activities that we will undergo as a student chapter of the ACM. You could start with the ACM page. We've also been talking about implementing software that will be useful for students of the UoPeople. You can include that in your plans, as well.

Obviously, we do not yet have enough members to be recognized as a student chapter. So, we will still need to invite more.

If you have questions, about anything, do reply to this thread. If not, we should be seeing each other on Wednesday (PHT) with your outputs, plus mine.

Thank you!

Something I forgot to add last time for Angela:

I was wondering if we could do some sort of crowdfunding, like Indiegogo or something. That can work. Theoretically.

Hi Joan, Angela, John and Rafael,

Congratulations for what you have achieved so far and my continuous words of encouragement to everyone. I wasn't here earlier because of technical issues but its ok now.
As a die-heart supporter of the initiative, you can always count me as a member. I support you all  in your various roles and God will show you the way forward.

Thank you Ateafac.

By the way, if you have the chops for it, you could take the Webmaster role. I don't want to give Angela too many tasks so, if you can help with something, try that.

- Joan

As a group there are many things we can do to educate the members. The ACM website provides many activities that I'll list below as well as some that are not.

- The ACM Learning Center website will provide the group with webinars that can be highlighted and discussed in a forum setting. This also provides other downloadable content such as podcasts, audiocast and interviews with those persons who are at the forefront of technology.
- The TechPack site will provide members with individual learning paths on cloud computing, parallel computing, enterprise architecture, mobility, business intelligence and data management, security or software as a services. The group can also decide to take these techpacks as a group as well.
- A what do you do with technology section can be added to the group website. Each member would describe how they work with technology on their job or what they are aspiring to do with their CS degree. This would help members get to know each other as well as provide mentors for those with similar interests.

I've just listed three items as a starter. However as their are so many avenues of learning listed on the ACM site, it maybe best after a time to ask our members where their interest lie and attempt to put together learning materials of our own from the ACM resources available.

I have contacted the advising office, about a letter which we can use to invite more members but I have not received a response yet.I believe when they respond I will have clear way on how to move forward.

I am also looking on ways to mobilize other student to join up with us.

Thanks Joan,

It's a pleasure and I would gladly fill this role as the  webmaster. Going forward, I think Sean can also be of great help and with joint efforts we can put up the best. Given the usual workload through each term, sharing some of these roles will help ensure  continuity.

Anything I should be doing, please just let me know.

What role am I supposedly helping with?

I was not informed of being involved in webmaster role.

Hi Sean,
I just made that proposal to the chair though there is no response
yet. That we can both handle the role of webmastering for the chapter
since I have been asked to fill this role. Given your experience and
the little time we all have, I think sharing this responsibility will
ensure availality and continuity in times of course work constraint.

While awaiting a response, I suggest we start thinking of where to
start by begining with some basic plans. What do you think?

I just thought about this idea and don't know effective this can be. I think if we come up with  a short threat that each member can post in his/her respective CS course forum. Then the message will get across to lot more students. The AAVO is another medium but the threat to be posted there could be more detailed, a sort of announcement which should get across to students not presently taking any CS course. Just thought I share this.

That is a good idea.

Here is another.  For those tasked with creating a website.  ACM has web tools:

I'm getting the fundraising plan together and will distribute it for your review soon.

The technical implementation will have to be discussed, prototyped, tested and verified.

It is not something that can be decided upon right now. One figure head will have to be appointed to satisfy requirements but if multiple heads can be appointed in place of the one webmaster it should utilised. The webmaster is serving as the last stop point of contact for the technical framework so the candidate needs to have someone degree of knowledge and familiarity with the technology. This person would have final say and full administration over the technology involved with the chapter. All technical issues would be address to the faces then passed on to the webmaster based upon priority. People appointed as the faces of the chapter to deal with the issues of students can be appointed after. Basic technical knowledge and customer service experience are their requirements.

I will fulfil the role of webmaster until someone more adequate is found, if needed. There is a large technical responsibility involved in the role. If I am not suitable I would recommend Justin Weeks as he implemented an infrastructure throughout the round of discussions.

I will state once again for clarity. The website serves every member of the chapter and you as the webmaster are responsible for all technical issues related. Everything! Just be please careful who you appoint. I am almost you can find someone better than myself but just be careful. Not something for the feint of heart.

Hi Angela,

I have taken of note and it should save us alot to start with instead
of getting a registered domain account.

We'll all build this this together, right now I am working on a survey
that should get us started.

The web tools recommended in the ACM website, has anyone filled out the request for them (web hosting and wiki engine)?

Hello everyone,

Due to the lack of response back last Wednesday, I decided to wait out the forum and see if there will be something after that. I guess, last Wednesday was too soon. So, we have another Wednesday coming at us and we need to submit before that. If we can complete the record of the membership status of everyone already in the group, we can give a more solid action plan to the concerned individuals from the university.

@Sean
You don't have to worry about taking on any major role. You didn't nominate yourself for anything and neither were you assigned. It was just a suggestion and you have already said that you don't have much time to spare and I understand that. Ateafac has agreed to take some load off of Angela by taking the Webmaster role. It's fine.

Dr. Zeller, of the Office of Student Affairs, who has been following our progress has given us a go to use the AAVO for outreach to the greater student body. We can use the CS forum and/or the general forum. I say we use both.

By the way, I need everyone's full name: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/uasc--pdg/lxP7PTPbN78. Thank you.

- Joan
