I’ve been listening. You’d think SiriusXM could’ve sprung for the music rights, but no. Like AntennaTV, sadly no evidence of Doc and the band.

That said, I heard a good episode from 1973 tonight with Flip Wilson, Tom Dreesen, Pat Boone, and a pediatrician. The pediatrician was hands down the best guest, but Flip Wilson’s parrot joke (well, the audiences reaction to it) was also worth a listen.

Johnny was fond of pointing out that Flip was bumped five times before he finally got on the show, whether the guest was Wilson himself or some young comic who'd been bumped.

I assume this was the pediatrician that Johnny would introduce as a “baby doctor,” then hold his hand out to indicate someone not very tall and say “a teeny tiny little baby doctor” or something to that effect. Can’t remember his name, but he was an entertaining guest.

I wasn’t kidding when I said he was a great guest. Funny, good rapport with Johnny, and able to share information in a genial, conversational style.

This evening’s episodes are in sequence and seem to be occurring shortly before Nixon’s resignation (which makes the potential impeachment jokes seem very timely), and at the time there was a “work stoppage” of musicians of TV shows, so Doc and the band weren’t there. Johnny repeatedly commented about the empty bandstands. Interesting historical vignette.

The episode I caught tonight was from March of 1978 and featured Carl Sagan. He had recently seen Star Wars, and his chief complaint (other than his contention humans would not have evolved in a galaxy far, far away) was that Chewbacca didn’t get a medal at the end of the movie. I can’t help but wonder if he was the first to publicly make that observation?
