I recently leafed through the report of a Royal Commission into Railways
and Tramways in Victoria (Australia) in 1912.

The attached image caught my eye.

According to the caption, this car achieved speed over 200km/hr on tests
in Marienfelde-Fossen.

Mal Rowe - amazed, but not surprised that it didn't reach production.

It looks similar to an Italian system which was used on heavy rail. I won’t comment on the top speed however.

Our American allies dabbled in 3 phase systems (for heavy rail) at least one of which used the rails as one phase. Not as scary as it sounds as that phase would have been referenced to earth or ground if you insist on speaking American. There is a chapter at least on this subject in “When the Steam Railroads Electrified” by one William D. Middleton a most fascinating book.
