hi! i am in the process of making the switch from screen to tmux.
one of the things are the entries to utmp which i see with "who":

guckes pts/18 tmux(26488).%20 23:05 6:52 13.79s 13.52s vim -S
guckes pts/24 tmux(26488).%24 08:31 24:52 0.33s 0.33s /bin/zsh
guckes pts/26 tmux(26488).%28 10:17 46:23 0.33s 0.00s man tmux
guckes pts/42 tmux(26488).%34 11:03 3.00s 0.23s 0.00s w
guckes pts/59 tmux(26488).%2 Thu15 13:06 19.28s 18.61s irssi
guckes pts/78 255.255.255.0- 07:42 14:22 0.33s 0.02s screen -d -RR
guckes pts/82 tmux(26488).%19 Thu23 36:17 7.10s 6.52s neomutt -y
guckes pts/85 tmux(26488).%5 Thu16 1:16 3.59s 2.93s neomutt -F ~/.neomutt/newsgroups -G
guckes pts/87 255.255.255.0- 07:43 4.00s 0.63s 0.00s tmux att
guckes pts/91 tmux(26488).%17 Thu22 12:39m 0.69s 0.19s less

is there a way to turn this off? maybe by setting an option?
or would i have to compile my own version of tmux for that?

screen has the "login" command to toggle entries on/off.
is there such a command in tmux? what should i look for?

Hi

You can build tmux without utempter (without is the default).

thanks! tried that. but the configuration fails with:

configure: error: "libevent not found"

i tried configuration by adding
"--libdir=$HOME/lib --libexecdir=$HOME/lib"
but got same error message.

however, the libs are definitely in my "$HOME/lib":

guckes@kudu:~/lib> ls -lL libe*(@)
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 1366880 Nov 20 12:45 libevent-2.1.so.7
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 888992 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_core-2.1.so.7
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 888992 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_core.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 505776 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_extra-2.1.so.7
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 505776 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_extra.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 97360 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_openssl-2.1.so.7
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 97360 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_openssl.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 26760 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_pthreads-2.1.so.7
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 26760 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_pthreads.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 guckes guckes 1366880 Nov 20 12:45 libevent.so

quite a few symlinks are there, too:
guckes@kudu:~/lib> ls -l libe*(@)
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 21 Nov 20 12:45 libevent-2.1.so.7 -> libevent-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 26 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_core-2.1.so.7 -> libevent_core-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 26 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_core.so -> libevent_core-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 27 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_extra-2.1.so.7 -> libevent_extra-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 27 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_extra.so -> libevent_extra-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 29 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_openssl-2.1.so.7 -> libevent_openssl-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 29 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_openssl.so -> libevent_openssl-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 30 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_pthreads-2.1.so.7 -> libevent_pthreads-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 30 Nov 20 12:45 libevent_pthreads.so -> libevent_pthreads-2.1.so.7.0.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 guckes guckes 21 Nov 20 12:45 libevent.so -> libevent-2.1.so.7.0.1

what am i missing here?

It is easiest to use pkg-config if you are building libevent or ncurses yourself, look at https://github.com/tmux/tmux/wiki/Installing

Hi Sven,

I gave an example of compiling tmux in this thread: https://groups.google.com/g/tmux-users/c/xdvM0J7aoro/m/TsHKenbpAQAJ

Maybe it will help.  What environment are you compiling in?

Regards,

Scott
