If one upgrades, are the 5.1.21 settings preserved?
And what about the plug-ins?

Official Tiddlywiki plugins will be upgraded, not other plugins.
If you do not have any overwritten core tiddlers, you should be fine.
Also take a good look at the list you will see when upgrading, that should give you a hint.

Keep a backup and go for it.

Let's say I have a TW file PeterWiki-1 and I have a copy called PeterWiki-2.
I then upgrade PeterWiki-1 from 5.1.21 to 5.1.22, and let's say it does not go well, the upgraded version freezes, even after closing and reopening it.

If I then open PeterWiki-2 (i.e. the copy I did not touch), which version does it run on: its original 5.1.21 or 5.1.22?

If it is the latter, it means 5.1.21 is gone for good from my computer. Is there a way to downgrade?

Peter

The upgrade mechanisium for single file wikis only upgrades the file its given and you have to save the update and you can give it a new name rather than save over your original. From past experience it is rare for the upgrade to fail. At most a feature does not work or a minor artifact appears.

The single file wiki is so simple to copy and backup even without automatic backups in most savers.

Tony

Tony, I am using a single file wiki. I am not overly concerned about the upgrade process, but I noticed in the comments of some of those who upgraded there were some issues. I prefer to be prepared than be confronted with a nasty surprise.

So, if I understand you well, you're basically saying that if the PeterWiki-1 file gets messed up during upgrade, using PeterWiki-2 (not upgraded) will run on 5.1.21: is that correct?

Yes

You could put it on a usb stick to avoid user error as well.

Basicaly the upgrade imports your old wiki but ignores core and tiddlers so that the new ones are in the upgrade file. You then save this to any filename and test it. If it works you can swap it with your old one.

It's not that your wiki "runs on" any version, like e.g a text document "runs on" a word processor. No, instead, in single file wiki "your wiki" and the stystem is integrated into a single file. So, it PeterWiki1 is really a totally different file from PeterWiki2. The one has nothing to do with the other. They don't share anything. Like the two files "madonna.jpg" and "britneyspears.jpg". Your Peterwikis are both html files. They run in the browser.

OK Mat, that is good input for my understanding.

I shall make a copy of the latest version of my HTML file and use that to upgrade. If all goes well, as it should, then eventually I can delete the 5.1.21 version. If all is not well then I still have 5.1.21.
Many thaks for clearing that up for me.
