Hey Everyone,

Looking for recommendations on a good vise. Renzetti? Anvil? What have you used / liked?

Matt,
You're going to get some very opinionated replies! We all love what we have finally discovered as "the best" vise, but frankly it's like buying a handbag: there are so many things to consider!

Ask to try out some different ones, think about what you want to tie, and go rotary. IMHO...:-)

Regal pedestal for me. No bells it whistles. Just a solid jaw that holds flies. Pedestal ensures I can tie anywhere.

I have a Renzetti traveler if I need the rotary function. Haven't used it in years. They also have great customer service and took care if me when it lost pieces.

Same cheap clamp vice I got for xmas when I was 11.  It holds a hook, so I can't justify the expense of a new one.  I'd love the rotary function though.  Other than that, all bells and whistles you can get add-ons for anyway.

I read an article on a Tenkara site regarding economical fly tying equipment. Based on that I got a Griffin Odyssey Spider Vice.
I like it a lot. It holds small and large hooks securely & rotates. I'm happy $90

Love my Renzetti traveler. I can't believe I took so long to get a good rotary vise.  I tie everything from tricos and midges to 3/0 striper patterns. I would never want to go back to a non rotary vise.

I like my ~15 year old Renzetti Traveler. Rotary function gets most use with wrapping chenille for buggers and floss for wets/soft hackles. Useful for carving packed deer hair to shape. I'm on my second set of jaws (dumb move on my part)
Mine's got the c-clamp, but I' m thinking about adding a pedestal base for it.

Another vote for the Renzetti Traveler I have been using it for more years than I can remember,  recently have been thinking about giving it to my son and buying a new   Renzetti 2000

I've got a 15 year old regal that I like for most flys, but I probably will splurge on a true rotary vise in the next few years.

I also have a Thompson A for traveling.  I don't know if you can stil get one, but it is the classic, simple vise.

Based on what I've seen, read, heard, tried, all the above suggestions are solid. Personally I tie on a Peak rotary with a pedestal base and I love it. Wasn't too expensive, it's solid, portable, you can accessorize things if you want, it holds the hook, and it is full rotary. Made in USA too. I might order a set of midge jaws just to try itty bitty things below size 22, but honestly have not gone there and needed one yet. If I ever get another I'd consider a Regal, because I like the simplicity.
