Ladies & Gentlemen:

I am writing to seek to fishing advice. I’ve been trying to teach myself how to fly fish the past two years and your forum has been a great help. So, first of all thanks.

I’ve been fishing all around the DC area and out to Shenandoah, Mossy Creek, and the NBPR, but tomorrow I am taking family to northeast Maryland and want to sneak away with my 10-year old son for a few hours of fishing.  I’ve been doing some research on Gunpowder Falls, but was hoping someone could provide a little bit of direction.  I’ll be using a fly rod, but my son still prefers his spinner rod.  (Once I start catching fish consistently, he’ll want to switch.)

For convenience, I was going to find a spot downstream from Corbett Road, close to Phoenix Road.  However, the MD DNR website seems to imply that the better fishing is closer to Prettyboy dam.  (Of course it sounds like there may be good fishing b/w Blue Mount Road and Corbett Road.

Does anyone have any thoughts on which stretch of river will have better action?  I appreciate anyone’s help.

Thank you.

This forum and its members can provide some insight, but I would encourage you and/or anyone else to go to Backwater Angler. Those guys have the river extremely dialed in and are always willing to provide real-time insight. Best of luck and please post how you do.

One piece of advise is to hike in for more than 10 minutes to get away from the road.  The fish near the parking areas see more flies and are more wary.  Let us know how you do.

How was your trip?  Have any luck?  The gunpowder is a great little river.  Some folks around DC don't like it because the average trout is small compared to other streams but I love it.  Of course, I learned to fly fish on it and have spent a lot of time figuring it out so I'm sure that leads to my bias.

The trip was a good outing with my son even though we did not catch anything.  I stopped by Backwater Anglers and they were very helpful and sent me to a spot better than where I planned to fish.   (At the bridge on Bunker Hill Rd.  The fishing was much better closer to the damn, but I did not want to drive that direction.) When I got to the river I meet a local who gave me lots of good advice.  He said there were a few fish in some pools on the bends, but I needed to work upriver about a mile or so to find better fishing.  However, we did not have time to make it all the way up there so just worked the pools.  He did say the zebra midges are the go to fly, so we'll go back and try again.

Not my pic. I have no desire to fish the Gunpowder for trout.

Is this for real? I had no idea they got anywhere near that big on the Gunpowder.

He was just posing for a "How to hold a fish by the gills for C&R puroses"  It's probably a carp with a good makeup job.

I looked it up on the MDDNR website.  Appears to be real.  http://dnrweb.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/fishingreport/log.asp  Looks like it was caught in the put and take section since he said he caught it beside the trail.  Sad really...that its now gone forever.  I can say that this one is still alive and well.  Caught her 2 weeks ago.
