Hello,

I was planning to do some car camping, and hiking in Shenandoah N.P. However with the Government Shutdown it looks like I may need to find another place. I looking for a good campsite preferably in the mountains within 2 hrs from NOVA with decent privacy and has some good hiking nearby. Anyone have any suggestions? Not planning on fishing. I know this is a little off topic, but I figured you guys might have some good suggestions.

Thanks!
Matt

Greenbrier State Park in Maryland is pretty close and open. Right off of  I70 past Frederick. 1.25 hours away (with no traffic). The Appalachian Trail passes through the park. There's a trail from the campground to to the AT. There's a lake but it's kinda silted up.

(I don't think this is considered to be a commercial link)

Bryan,
A little further afield, you might try Cowans Gap State Park, just north of Mercersburg, PA. If you have ever skied at Whitetail, you just drive another 20-30 minutes. Camping, fishing in the lake, level trail around the lake amongst others, and hiking along the Tuscarora Trail for a change.

I offer the link below as a public service.
