Walked the canal yesterday with a buddy and spooked 3 large snakeheads hanging along bike path side in root structures just west of Whitehurst overpass.  Definitely can't confuse two beady eyes and the camo-ed body with anything else.

well, I suppose that means they'll show up at Widewater (near Anglers Inn) before too long

Probably carp, and fish cannot get up the locks.

There was already a Snakehead caught above Great Falls two years ago, but I haven't heard anything about Snakehead's up that far since, see this article or Google for more: http://www.loudountimes.com/index.php/news/article/snakehead_found_off_whites_ferry123/

I haven't personally seen any Snakehead in the Canal but I would be surprised if they weren't in there.

Don’t doubt that they’re in the canal.  I’ve seen them as high up as the Wisconsin Ave overpass.

The above the falls catch was a hoax/fraud. The came clean about it a few months later. Don't doubt it will happen with all the live snakeheads being removed with nets and taken away alive from the river.

When does the snakehead spawn end?  And does that mean they'll start taking lures again (oh so selectively...)?

The C&O Canal was fishing pretty well yesterday. Caught a couple nice-sized bass (for me, anyway). One was around 12 inches.

Also, I saw two snakehead in the canal right by Fletchers. I was no more than three feet away -- they were right below me -- and there was no mistaking them. The one was an adult and the other looked like an adolescent. I haven't seen them in the canal before (granted, I only started fly fishing last spring).

DNR recently confirmed they are in the canal and are worried about them moving above the falls.

Been in the canal for years. Caught a few fit the first time three years ago and have caught every year since. If they were to get rid of them more could just get in any time

Northern snakeheads spread to upper Potomac, C&O Canal - Richmond Times-Dispatch: Ap

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says northern snakehead fish have made their way into the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, and almost certainly the upper Potomac River.

Fishery managers are urging people to catch and kill the predatory fish.

Snakeheads are native to China, Korea and Russia. They can breathe air, survive on land and adapt and thrive in foreign environments.

The agency says anglers reported catching two northern snakeheads last fall in the canal several miles upstream from Great Falls. Biologists have since documented a 7-inch juvenile, an adult and a school of fry in the same section.

Northern snakeheads appeared in the tidal Potomac watershed in 2002. They are now firmly established in the Patuxent River, and have spread to other tidal waters in Maryland and Virginia.

Again the use of that same stock image of a fish that isn't a Northern Snakehead.

According to a MD DNR officer I spoke with at the last casting for recovery event, the Blackwater River in md has recorded the most number of snakeheads in it... more than the mattawoman or little hunting creek..... kinda a drive from dc md va though

Today on the Popville blog:

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday I took my first walk along the tow path in Georgetown since moving to DC 8 years ago. I’m not sure why I never visited it sooner, but I was impressed with how clean the water looked and was kind of surprised at all the aquatic life I saw enjoying a warm summer day. But then like a screeching record, I spotted this (see attached pics).

There it was … a snakehead just chilling out. I have heard they’re incredibly invasive and can inflict significant damage in the waters where they live. I’m wondering what PoPville readers know about them. Is the canal infested with them? Can anything be done to get rid of them? Or are they just part of the ecosystem now and not anything to worry about?”

TPFR gets some press as well.
