Two friends and I did a float this Saturday on the lower Juniata river above Harrisburg, PA. We were rented a canoe and shuttle from Riverfront Campground for two of us. Our third guy Ryan brought his SUP. He's just getting started in fly fishing, and may be posting on the forum soon!

Luckily the rivers up north were not as affected with all the rain we've been having here. Despite being rained on a little at first conditions were nearly perfect. The river was a little higher than average with just a little color, but still good visibility. The overcast sky kept fish active all day. In the morning we got some fish on yellow poppers. As the day progressed we got more fish on a McGinnis Extra Stout, including the nice 18 incher in the picture. The section we fished was a great stretch of water with many ledges, and riffles which held the most active fish. At the take out I was talking to some spin fisherman who said they got about 30-40 fish fishing senkos. We didn't get quite that many, but still had a great day!

Good work! Did you see a lot of weeds in the lower section? The only time I've floated that stretch the water was super low and super clear and we had a lot of difficulty getting close enough to cast without spooking fish.

There were some weed patches but they weren't too dense to cause any issues.

Does anyone have a good way to fish dense vegetation with a fly?  When ever i hit really heavy stuff im stuck resorting to my spinning rod.

Thanks,

If you find weed mats drop a topwater fly into any holes in the mat, give it a pop or a twitch, and hold on.  Otherwise, I find it generally best to try to run your fly over the top of the weeds.  Select a fly and retrieve based on the depth of the weeds.  Go topwater if there is too little room between weeds and surface.  Also, mono weed guards can be a life (and fly) saver and are pretty easy to tie.

Alright.  I will have to try that.  What do you use as a leader?  The bass ive hooked into on spinner have broken me off with 55lb braid line.  Mostly due to the vegetation i believe.

Thanks,

If they're breaking 55lb line, it's because it is getting nicked or subjected to abrasion. I never use anything bigger than 0X, and usually 3X - although I rarely fly fish heavy weeds anymore. Make sure you check your leader for nicks, wind knots, and abrasion often.

Most of it is do to those heavy roots from down in the tidal Potomac and not fishing top water.

Thanks

I don't fish in vegetation very much but If it's just on the bottom I feel Clouser style flies with barbel eyes don't snag as much because the hook rides upright. You could also tie mono loops on your hooks

If a warmwater fish turns it's nose up on 16lb fluoro, I'm not interested in catching it, ha!  Lucky for me, I haven't met one yet.

If you're breaking 55lb braid, it's more likely from shock and/or a nick in the line.  The breaking strength of braids will often be much more than the lb rating of the line for a dead pull.  But if you were to shock the line, they can break at less than the rating -- think casting off a lure when you get a wind-knot when casting on spin.  The tensile strength of 20lb Fireline has been observed over 54 lbs. Similary, Cortland Spectron 50lb has been observed to hold over 83 lbs.

Take a look at Pat Cohen's flies - his deer hair numbers use a double mono weed guard - don' t see any reason why you can't do likewise with flies that run sub-surface.
