I got my first striper this morning! It's nothing to brag about but I'll take it. I also caught a long skinny creature on the same orange/white clouser. Anyone know what it's called?

The most exciting thing happened when I first got there. I was casting by the wall of the outflow and something in the water beneath me caught my eye. I almost dismissed it because it was just a pale shadow that blended in with the fast moving whitewater. But as it moved in a bit closer it became apparent that it was a fish the length of my leg! It hovered at the edge of the water for a minute and could clearly make out a snout--I'm pretty sure it was a sturgeon. I didn't have my camera on me, unfortunately, and I didn't want to run over to my bag and lose sight of it.

It all made for a beautiful morning at Gravelly!

Well done, Cooper! And if you're right about seeing a sturgeon, that would be great news!

The long, skinny creature looks to be a Needlefish. I've never caught one, but I heard they don't smell so good...

Awesome Coop!  What size clouser were you using?

I can confirm the bad smell. I thought the wind just coincidentally blew in a farty smell.

Size 4. I caught it right at the bank, too.

Only thing worse than a needlefish is a Jawa. They showed up rather late this year which is fine by me.

Great striper catch!

Any chance the fish you spotted was a Gar? They should be heavy in that area by now. The number of sturgeon in the river is low so the likelihood that it was a sturgeon, let alone a juvenile sturgeon is pretty slim.

Gar was my first thought. I didn't think the snout and body in general were long and slender enough to be a gar. But I could definitely be wrong. If sturgeon are so rare, I guess chances are it was a gar and my fish id skills are not up to snuff.

Gar have been spawning, and when they are not splashing around they often just kind of sit there. Hope it was a sturgeon, though.

I have now seen several gar that just sit in the eddy on the park side of the outflow. Probably what it was. One of them that I saw was pushing 4'.

I guess that's what it was. Not as exciting as a sturgeon, but any fish that's several feet long is exciting to me!
