Visiting Bozeman MT

Hey all, I am traveling to Bozeman and Missoula to visit schools next week. Can anyone recommend some good guides out there? My dad who has not been fly fishing before is coming with me and I'm looking to do a float trip while I'm out there. Thanks!

Last time I was out there I fished with Jim Eberhard out of the Rivers Edge Flyshop.    He was good and I would recommend him.  We floated the Yellowstone. 

No idea what conditions are like this year, but you may be pre-runoff.  Otherwise things could be high.  If so the paradise valley spring creeks are great but are not the place for someone who has never fished before.

Also, I just got back from Bozeman a week ago and your floating options are probably slim to none right now.  They've had a ridiculously warm end to winter/spring, so runoff has basically already started.  The Yellowstone was blown out, maybe only 1 foot of visibility.  I know they did get a cold snap when I left, but unfortunately you may not be able to float anywhere and have a productive day.

If I were you, I'd try to walk/wade the Madison.  It's about 90 minutes from Bozeman, but the drive is gorgeous and 150% worth it.  The rainbows are on the spawn right now, so fishing on the upper Madison has been NUTS.  My father and I were looking for a hot tub to loosen up our arms after a day on the Upper Madison 2 weeks ago.  Think shad season in prime time.

Furthering my prior post, I would 100% call Wild Trout Outfitters and book one of their guides.  If you can get Dave, then get him.  They'll know what is fishable, and will 100% put both you and your dad on fish.  

If you get Dave, tell him that Kevin and Connor from DC sent you.  Oh and also, he has a hat and a buff of mine - if you bring them back I'd be forever grateful!  God speed.

Its hard to go wrong in Missoula. I would recommend the Missoulian Angler  (ask for Taylor Scott) but the guides from the Grizzly Hackle and Blackfoot River outfitters are excellent as well. Salmon flies ought to be out on Rock Creek. That would be a great way to get your dad hooked on fly fishing.If water levels spike head up to Craig Montana and try to get a trip with the guys at Headhunters on the Missouri River. While in Missoula stop in a and get some ribs at the Notorious P.I.G. Awesome BBQ.

I moved back from Missoula in August after getting a Masters from UMT. Let me know if you need any other info about the town.

The trip was awesome, we ended up fishing with Dave at Wild Trout Outcitters. We fished the Madison and some of the smaller creeks outside of the west Yellowstone area. We caught a bunch of rainbows and cutbows from 12" to 22" with a few mountain whitefish in the mix.

We visited the missoulan angler and grizzly hackle (both are awesome shops) while we were in Missoula. I have not officially decided on a school but it looks like I will be spending the next few years working on my bachelors in parks and recreation management at the University of Montana. Missoula is such a great place.
