I fished at 4MR today 1:00 ~ 4:00PM.

The water temperature felt cold, but surprisingly, fish were there.

With a single fly, I caught more than fifty fish on it.

Here are some results.

Tight Lines,

Todd

I found a silicone maggot  grub (1.7mm) on e-bay and used #12 hook, split shot 12" from the fly and indicator.

make sure that maggot is on the bottom and dragging.

Man Todd... you own 4MR!!!

I was up further towards the outfall and had a bunch of sunnies - but I got to catch me some of those Potomac Golds!!!

Tyler - I hope you made it down towards the island and the bridges and got some of this action.

Vic

Vic,

I did, I made my way to the power line island, your were right its deep there.  I was about maxing out my waders.  Well worth it though, I got like ten sunnies, and four bass, none over 8 inches, but fish non the less.  All on  #4 all white clouser.

Slow rolling grubs is a deadly technique for winter largemouth on spin gear.....cool to see it can be applied on a fly rod

Hi Vic -- can you fish weighted grubs with tenkara?

I'm still interested in that -- just haven't pulled the trigger yet.  I haven't decided one way or the other whether it would increase my sunfish fun or not ;).

Vic or Todd,
Could your PM me the URL for the ebay store you got the grub from.  There is quite a variety and I can't remember exactly what I saw on Todd's line this past Sat.

Gene -

I have done it before, but it takes some experimenting to get the results you would want (still being able to cast the line and not dabbing) - so it really depends on the strength of the rod and the weight of the grub.

On the lighter side of the rod spectrum (like the one I let you cast in the 4MR parking lot several weeks back - Nissin Fine Mode Nagare), I'd say no.  If you used a bruiser (like the one I catch carp with - Daiwa 43MF Kiyose), I'd say yes heartily.

I think the middle ground is using real small split shot and a small grub on a medium weight rod - you really don't want to catch sunnies on a bruiser.

And actually - you probably would have WAY more fun using a lightweight rod (google "seiryu rod") and tying on a Sawyer's Killer Bug with a beadhead for now (winter - sunnies shying away from surface hits), and a "micro-gurgler" when the fish start taking bugs from the surface.  Forget the split shot all together.

I like tenkara, but it has it's place and it has not replaced lightweight conventional fly fishing for me.  In a nutshell - if I am backcast limited for whatever reason, or I will be close-in sight fishing (<10'), I'll break out a tenkara rod - sized according to the target fish.

Hope this helped.

Vic
