T Jones and I made an early exit this morning to hit the upper Potomac for a few hours to give the Smallmouth a go. The water was high and a bit off color, but we found some wadable water. Fishing started out red hot when a large fish rolled on my blue popper on the first cast, but unfortunately he came unbuttoned quickly. After that, I don't think either of us hooked a smallie in at least an hour, fishing crease flies, poppers, muddlers and wooly buggers with all types of retrieves. Fishing remained slow all morning, but we managed a few Bass and Bluegill with most being on the smaller side. When we were about ready to leave, I spotted a few large carp feeding in a rocky slack water area. I gave them each a few casts with a black conehead wooly bugger with a look and refusal, and then finally hooking a beast at close range.

All in all, a solid day, even if the Smallmouth fishing was a bit weak.
