Hello all:

I need some suggestions on the wt of switch rod for steelhead in Erie and Salmon river. I wonder what weight of a 11 ft switch rod is good for steelhead?

Thanks!

I fished the Salmon River for the first time about a week and a half ago. I used a single handed 9-foot 8 wt. While It worked nicely, though I couldn't cover as much water as those who were using longer switch rods.

I think you'd be happy with an 11-foot 8 weight.

Agree with Scott, 7s and 8s are the norm.  I have a 7 and have use it from here to Alaska on fish up to 20 lbs., so I think they are perfectly adequate for most GL Steelhead.  But, if throwing the chicken flies is your thing, or if you plan to overlap with the run of Kings up there, the 8 may be a better choice.  Can't really go wrong with either.  Have fun in the search!

Yeah... I went to Salmon River last Sept/Oct and I used 13'-6" spey rod. I don't have to worry about the space or tree in the back in some area.....

Currently, I have single hand xi2 7wt and 9wt and I also have a 7wt TCX 12'6" spey rod same as John's. On last year salmon river trip, I caught steelhead on the spey rod and also found it was easy to break the 12lb tippet if I hooked a king. I didn't fish this year because of graduation and job hunting. I have just located a job in Maryland so it is the time to think about future fishing plan. I plan to do more steelhead fishing and consider to get a 7wt 10ft SH rod for nymphing steelhead. Couple of my friends suggested me to consider 11 ft swtich rod because it is lighter than a spey and don't need to worry about space. However recommended 5wt or 6wt for steelhead and I wasn't sure about it is good for steelhead. Maybe I should just use the 12'6" spey and see if I really need a lighter 11ft switch. Thanks!

I have an 8wt Echo Switch that is 11' 3" and has become one of my favorite rods. Its versatile, casts a mile, and is very usable overhead and once I learn how to spey cast I'm sure it will do well with that as well.  It was very reasonablly priced, adn the 4 piece makes it easy to travel with.  I've used it for redfish, oregon steelhead, shad, and just caught a few big ladyfish off the beach in Mexico beach Florida.

My Echo rod is a model Sr81010 and it is a 4 piece, 10 foot 10 inch length (I had previously said 11 foot 3 inch).  Highly recommended.
