I'm going to be in Asheville in mid April. Has anyone worked with a guide there they would recommend and is there a specific body of water I should focus on? Floating on larger water would be my preference.

Ed -- we have friends who recently retired to the area (they're birders, but not fly fishers unfortunately).  I'll follow this post, but let me know what you find out -- we plan to visit this area this Spring.

Dave Hise at Caster's Fly Shop in Hickory, a couple towns over from Asheville ((828) 304-2400), has been the runner up or second runner up Orvis Endorsed guide of the year the past several years. Would strongly recommend him as a guide. He has several flies in the Orvis catalog, too, and they work

Cheers,

From a friend:

"We were closer to Burnsville, NC, which was about 30-45 mins from Asheville. We used an outfitter in Spruce Pine, NC, called Rivers Edge Outfitters.

The guide's name, who I thought was very good, was Cade--he took us to some public fishing rivers and they also had some private waters that we fished, too."

The trophy section of the Raven's Fork in Cherokee, NC is definitely worth your time....Fish per mile, average size, and access is pretty hard to beat.

Davidson River Outfitters is about 30 minutes south.  Had the pleasure of hanging out with Kevin Howell and Walker Parrott a couple of times.  Those boys can fish and they are all around good guys.
