Happy New Year everyone on the forum, I wish you all the best of health, happiness, and tight lines for 2014!

I am a big fan of the Gunpowder River and although yes, many of the trout there are picky and on the smaller end of the spectrum, one must admit they are beautiful.  I wanted my first fish of 2014 to be a trout so I made the trip to the Gunpowder today.  I fished the heat of the day, a little past 1pm, and dredged two zebra midges across the bottom.  Adding split shot did the trick.  My indicator dipped down and I set the hook on what I thought was a very large brown, as browns make up 97% of the Gunpowder's population.  While fighting the fish from the depths and about to net it I realized something trailing behind that brown.  It was a brookie who took the bottom zebra midge!!

My first outing this year was a success as I landed my first brook trout and experienced my first double header on the fly.  It is the wild beauty of these fish that keeps me coming back to fish the Gunpowder again and again.

Tight Lines in 2014!!

Awesome stuff! That's one hefty brookie!

Dude let me know next time to head to the gunpowder.  I need some of your fishing mojo to rub off on me!

Yea, will holler at you next time.  I do fish the Gunpowder quite often.  As it warms up though, I want to make it a habit to branch out and start fishing the Savage.

As long as it's flowing around 180ish you're good to go on the Lower Savage....fished it a few weekends ago when it got up to 800cfs (everywhere else was blown out) and didn't have any issues either. Very technical but rewarding fishery. Recently got into the streamer game up that way....makes you look at trout fishing in an entirely different light.

Flytimes, any pointers on winter streamer fishing?  I've never been much good with streamers.  Camped out just after new years on the lower savage for a few days after new years and tried swinging, but no luck.  Though it was a lot of fun.

Matt,

If you can dig up an article by Matt Handy from Trout Magazine (about 12 years old) about winter trout fishing with streamers. It covers just about everything.

Nice catches! Where did you access the river? I wonder if anyone has thoughts on whether the "winter vortex" would have any lasting impact on trout populations (I.e. until the next stocking).
