Hey everyone - way back in the FAQ post over at https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/thevalleyrpg/O4ttlv0A768 I talked about the possibility of longer adventures spanning multiple sessions, where player characters could go on longer voyages and explore more.

Now that we've got a few characters at third level, and they've proven themselves capable explorers, I thought it might be a good idea to remind people of this possibility. There are a few occasions when we've had to stop exploring because we've run out of time in a session (for example the trip to Duhlmora) or cases when we've had to end one session and "finish off" in another (for example, the recent exploration of the Blightwood, or the first trip to Taurtaikatanur).

If characters could go out for longer, we could do something covering two or perhaps three sessions where we could get some serious exploring done. Spend some time in Duhlmora, take in Bressel and Tebin, go see the dwarves at Kassiter, etc.

It would mean the same people would have to be free for multiple sessions, but in lockdown that's going to be easier than it was before. Don't forget you can roll up first-level "alts" if you want to play while your main characters are away, if you want to.

What do you all think?

I'm all for the idea, especially if we can play "alts" to fill in gaps. I do worry though about it meaning that we effectively split into 2 or 3 "regular gaming groups" and the dynamic of this whole world gets a bit lost and just inundated with requests for games and you get fed up with running effectively 3 full time games.

Also, We might be all character rollplayers and such, but XP does drive it, so we'd have to look at how XP is awarded throughout the longer campaign type adventurers perhaps.

But, I am happy to do the suck it and see approach.

I was definitely thinking of giving it a "trial run", if it doesn't work out we can knock it on the head.

Also Kate, you're right - I wouldn't want to see adventuring cliques forming, I think we'd have to make sure it wasn't the same people all the time.

It's getting a *little* like that at the moment, and I appreciate you offering to let other people play to keep the groups more mixed. I know we've got a few people who haven't played for a while, though there are a lot of different reasons for that - I know it's not that they don't want to.

As you know, I'm definitely up for this idea.

The world beyond our little Valley has expanded to the extent now that it takes some time to explore some of the places we'd like to investigate.  There have been a couple of games recently where our in-character justifications for heading back felt a bit forced, since the real reason was we'd run out of game time.

Multiple parties heading out at the same time sounds fine.  There's no need to stop another group going off if one isn't back yet.  I agree with Kate that we need to make sure we don't fragment into the same groups every time, but I think that's on all of us. I've been making a conscious effort to mix it up and try to meet everybody's characters.

Well, anyone can be my entourage...
