This is a reminder that the GSoC application deadline is April 4,
which is just over a week away.

Also remember if you plan to submit an application that we require
that all applications submit a pull request to the SymPy repository.
Your pull request should be submitted by the deadline, and your
application should list all the PRs you have submitted.

Hi Aaron,

Do the PRs have to specific to our proposed project? Or they can by any minor PR just to demonstrate our familiarity with SymPy codebase?

It doesn't have to be, although it's not a bad idea in general because you'll need to become familiar with that part of the code anyway if you get accepted.

We place a significant weighting on the quality of the pull requests when reviewing applications. The PRs are the primary way that applicants demonstrate their coding ability to us. It's not really about "familiarity with the SymPy codebase". We expect that applicants won't be very familiar with SymPy yet. Rather, it is more about how you are able to work your way through the challenges that arise when implementing something or fixing a bug.  If your only PR is something that is very trivial, that doesn't really demonstrate your coding skills to us very well.

Hi Aaron,

I would request some more light on this: "Also remember if you plan to submit an application that we require
that all applications submit a pull request to the SymPy repository."

Based on the student instructions page, here:
<I apologise if my doubts are silly :)>
My doubts are:
  • Point 5 says this: "Develop your application. We suggest putting your application on the SymPy wiki for reviewing.", so does sympy wiki mean this wiki section?  D So we open a PR for our application as README?o we open a PR for our application as README?
  • Also, Point 7 says this: "The application deadline is April 19 18:00 UTC" for the application deadline so that's what I assumed not April 4th.
Thanks.

Cheers,
Sujant

Hi Sujant,

The instructions on the Wiki page are a bit outdated. Look at the official GSoC page for information regarding the deadlines. Aaron is correct: the deadline for GSoC 2023 is April 4th. Last year, in 2022, the deadline was April 19th. It appears that the wiki hasn't been updated to reflect this year's timeline.

As for your question about the GSoC application, what I've seen GSoC applicants do is make their application as a Google Doc and then send a link to it on the mailing list for feedback, similar to what Anurag has done.

I hope that helps!
Regards,

Hi Tirthankar,

Thanks for being quick :)
Also, you meant we send it here itself for feedback, OR on Gitter as well?

Thanks.

Yes, if you search the wiki you can see other examples of applications. It's not required to upload it there, but if you want us to take a look before you submit it you can put it there.

  • Also, Point 7 says this: "The application deadline is April 19 18:00 UTC" for the application deadline so that's what I assumed not April 4th.

My apologies, I forgot to update that page. The deadline is based on the official Google timeline https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline

You should do it here. People aren't really using gitter anymore (https://groups.google.com/g/sympy/c/jisKFe_xsd0/m/qROXY19kBAAJ)

Thanks.
