USSA membership

I have been paying the dues for the USSA membership over the years. Does
everyone still think it is a good idea? I think we may need it for the
regattas but there hasn't been much activity as of late.

I would like to encourage having a regatta, but with the sleep deprivation (finally getting better after 3 1/2 yrs) I have not had the focus or energy to contribute to making it happen. I have not sailed in 3 full seasons now, and am hoping that I will be able to change that this next spring. I would like someone else to take on being the spark for this, as I am still overwhelmed with covering my mundane daily needs. It sounds like there are people sailing, but not like anyone is organizing for the moment.

Hi there,

Well, I have been thinking that we should do a regatta in Summerland BC this year. There were three boats with standing rigging set up at the South Okanagan Sailing Association (SOSA) last summer, and I can easily trailer mine up from the coast. Any US Swifties willing to make the pilgrimage would be great. The easiest thing to do would be to ask for a class start at a scheduled SOSA event, hopefully not in August, when winds are usually light there.

Perhaps one of our SOSA swifties could suggest a date? I am very willing to help organize. If we play our cards right, we might entice the Fireball or 505 groups from the coast to come up...they are fun groups of excellent sailors.

Robert, contestants would need to have a BC Sailing registration only, so that doesn't effect your US Sailing decision.

Hi Robin,

Good to hear some action in the group again.  It's been a while.

A Swift regatta sounds great, I don't know if I can make it to BC, there are some pretty big hurdles.  No trailer, or even a vehicle that could tow one if I found a trailer.  That said, if we can get a few boats, I'd work on figuring this out.

I also think this would be a good idea. I would do what I need to to get there - if my body allows for it. I will probably be occupied with work from late May through mid June. Also, my mom has Alzheimer's and so her care needs are pretty unpredictable and her issues certainly don't care about my scheduling needs! - Philip

I’m pretty far from BC, but I’d love to sail with other boats.  

Would anyone be interested in coming to Oklahoma in May?  My club, Windycrest Sailing Club, has a multi-class regatta that would be great.  There’s a beach nearby to launch from.  The multihulls will be over there also.  Tent camping or RV spots are available at the club and beach area.

Hi Robin,

I've been holding off replying to this ..honestly hoping for some good news. Sadly I cannot offer it. 

Last Monday we lost a good friend ..Dave Lindsay succumbed to pancreatic cancer. He managed to go peacefully...it was a very rapid process...shockingly rapid ..as it always seems to be with pancreatic cancer. He found out just before Christmas on his return from Asia. 

The 3 swifts at SOSA look to be departing...mine back to the coast, Dave's to his family and Mike's potentially to an interested party. I am sure if you approached SOSA they might be able to help out...or more to the point Mike J (who lives in Penticton) could take initial steps to organise if you were to ask him?

Keep us posted and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Ahhh, very sorry to hear about David. Life is just too darn short...

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I feel like I've heard far too many accounts of pancreatic cancer in the last 10 years. I did not know dave personally, but offer my condolences to his friends and family - Philip
