OK, you can get started on that. I don't see any italics in the
transcription so the PG transcription may have removed formatting.
You'll have to eyeball each page scan to see if we have to restore any
formatting. I already see that there's a facsimile of a letter in the
page scans, so you can convert that to SVG to include in the ebook.

Please send a link to your repo once you get started!

Finally got started on this (life got busy.)

Github repo: https://github.com/cbbowman/edward-payson-roe_driven-back-to-eden
Candidate art: "The Flood Gate" by Homer Watson - https://standardebooks.org/artworks/homer-watson/the-flood-gate

I took a stab at making the SVG of the handwritten letter using Inkscape. One question I had was regarding the alt-text for the letter. My first thought was that the alt text should be an exact transcription of the note. And since that would be too long for an entry in the LoI, the LoI entry should just be something like  "A letter."

Are their any other SE works that have already done handwritten letters?

OK, Vince will manage this with Weijia reviewing.

Vince can you look at the cover art and address his questions below?

The alt should contain the text of the letter, but there’s nothing in SEMoS that limits the length of the LOI entry.

The art is in our database so PD is obviously OK, but how does it relate to the book, and please do a mockup of how it would look as a cover.

Understood. The line in the SEMoS that made me think the LoI entry needed to be short was this:
"If the <figcaption> element is too long for a concise LoI entry, the alt attribute is used instead.

One of the over-arcing themes of the book is perseverance against nature. The contrast between the storm and the man seemed really fitting.
I've attached a mockup.

Ok, noted.

The handwritten note has a word inserted with a caret; would it be appropriate to describe this in the alt text?
"It can be bought at about [the word "about" inserted with a caret] the figure you name"

Unless it’s pertinent, i.e. mentioned, I don’t think so. Whether it’s inserted or not doesn’t make any difference to someone reading it.

Ok. It's not directly referenced later in the story, so I'll leave it out. Thanks!
