I would like to do The Rescue for my first project. I'm just finishing reading it and think that it would be good starting point. 

Outside of Szymon, I didn't see anyone else talking about it.

There's an epigraph, dedication, and preface, so include those before the half titlepage. This book has a subtitle, which you'll have to include in the metadata and half titlepage. 

The book is divided into parts, see the manual for how to structure that. PG has removed the formatting from the chapter headers so make sure to restore that. They may have also removed more formatting like italics, so please eyeball the page scans to see if there are any italics or other formatting, like letters, to restore.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting, as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns, and typography sections:

I'm almost finished with The Rescue and have an idea for the cover image and wanted to run it past you.
I'm looking at "View of Talagabodas" by Raden Saleh which I think will work well with the other two Lingard books' covers.  'An Outcast of the Islands' cover is also a by Raden Saleh. I'm not finding references to painting in past publications

Alex,

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find any copyright information for the two images I previously mention.

After going down a couple of images which just led to more rabbit holes.

So I circled back images that have already been cleared for SE and found one that I think will work.

It won't match the other two Lingard books' covers but it definitely works for the book. 

There is a pivotal scene in the book with Lingard and Mrs. Travers on the water at night that the image matches.

I'm thinking of 'Point Judith, Rhode Island' by Martin Johnson Heade. 

Crop it around the middle of the image, including the single boat and the moon and I think it will work.

Just let me know.

but you could try running a filter over the whole thing to smooth them
out a tiny bit, to see how it looks.

Also note that many of them refer to quotes around book names. Book
names are italicized and not quoted, so remove quotes from around all
book titles.

Alex,

I've removed the double quotes around the book titles in the preface. I was still receiving an error with the single quotes around Narcissus on line 16. I replaced them with double quotes. Would that be the correct formatting? Se lint no longer generated an error after that change so I wasn't sure if it's correct or just ignored.

Also corrected the epigraph styles.

I have a couple more questions after running se lint. 

• chapter-1-2.xhtml: Line 143 and chapter-3-9.xhtml: Line 76 - Title not correctly titlecased (<i epub:type="se:name.vessel.ship">Ly-e-moon</i>)
  • I assumed since this was a name of a vessel I would leave it the way it is in the source. Would capitalizing 'moon' be be correct and also do the same for the 'e'?
• chapter-5-5.xhtml: Line 70 - Possible typo: Punctuation not within ’.  (... the ‘Man of Fate’,” ...)
  • Should I be wrapping Man of Fate with an emphasis instead of the single quotes? Or do I need a hair space before the comma?

You don't need single quotes either for book titles, only italics. See

It’s not clear to me from either of the uses of Ly-e-moon what, if anything, that word is, i.e. is it of a person, a thing, made up, what? In the cases of publications, we always alter to title case; here, it seems to me to be a bit up in the air. Does Ly-E-Moon make more sense? If you know from reading the book what it is, then that might make it more obvious what to do. Otherwise, I’d probably just add an ignore entry.

For Man of Fate, the error says exactly what the problem is. Commas and periods go inside all punctuation. And then you’ll need to rerun typogrify, because there should be a hairspace between the single and double quote.

"Ly-e-moon" is a romanization of the name of a place in Hong Kong. The
current standard romanization is "Lei Yue Mun"; Wikipedia notes
various other versions that have been used in the past, which are not
consistent about how the component parts are capitalized. Enough of
them capitalize only the first letter that one could argue a precedent
for keeping Conrad's capitalization.

Since Conrad's "Ly-e-moon" is a ship, I'll note that Wikipedia also
has an article on a ship called the SS Ly-ee-Moon, which appears to
have been usually represented with a lower e and an upper M, although
the article also cites a contemporary source that used "Ly-Ee-Moon".

I had a chance to work on the changes and after a couple of false starts with git rebase I hit a wall. Git wasn't using my local text editor and once as soon as I got that squared away the rebase would start and then immediately end. After trying to abort the rebase Git tells me there is no rebase. I tried to find a solution online without much luck. I ran git reflog and it looks like there was a rebase but I wasn't prompted to edit the todo list.

Sure, I ran "git rebase -i --root". 

I tried it again and noticed that it will create and open in VSCodium a 'git-rebase-todo' file but it is blank and in an unsaved state.

VSCodium thinks the file is in "~/Documents/GitHub/joseph-conrad_the-rescue/.git/rebase-merge/" however that folder doesn't exist anymore. None of the folders/files that rebase creates stay after it abruptly stops. When it runs I can see folders/files being created but then they're gone.

I cloned your repository and ran `git rebase -i --root` and had no issue with rebasing. I think the problem lies in the default text editor that you have set for git. I suggest setting the text editor to a command-line text editor that you are comfortable with (I personally use vim) and trying the rebase again.

@Steven - I take it you're still on an older version of the Toolset? (Current is v.3.1.0.) If you haven't updated since you began, you could be on v.2.9.3; could you confirm which you're on? Regardless, `se lint` is throwing errors that should even show up with that version. Could you fix them, push your updates, and let me know when that's done? I'll resume the review at that point. Thanks!

Okay - review #2 is now ready. As flagged previously, this will involve some more complex rebase operations than the renaming of commits that we had in the first round. One, at least, is not of a kind I've had to do before! If you need help with this, best to ask here, and hopefully some help will be forthcoming. (I've given some links to help in the review in any case.)

Hopefully the changes are all clear; as before, do ping me from the GitHub issue if you have questions arising.
