Over the past few years we've worked to prepare some highlights of the
books that will enter the US public domain on Jan 1 ahead of time, so
that we can release them on Jan 1.

In 2025, all books published before Jan 1, 1930 will enter the US public
domain - in other words, books that were published in 1929.

Wikipedia has a good list of some highlights:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1929_in_literature#New_books

I personally would like to reserve Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammet.

There are some top tier entries this year. Some that I think are
especially interesting:

- The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

- All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

- A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

- A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf - just shy of 40k words, do we
make an "Essays" omnibus?

- Laughing Boy by Oliver La Farge - Pulitzer winner 1930

Others that caught by eye:

- Death of a Hero by Richard Aldington

- The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie

- Partners in Crime, a short collection by Agatha Christie - needs
research on a possible onmibus, but theses stories are themed so this
might be a standalone?

- Magnificent Obsession by Lloyd C. Douglas

- The Maracot Deep by Arthur Conan Doyle

- Cup of Gold by John Steinbeck

- Good-Bye to All That by Robert Graves - But do we wait for the
rewritten 1958 edition?

- Magick in Theory and Practice by Aleister Crowley - very advanced
production, highly idiosyncratic

- The Dain Curse by Dashiell Hammet

- Dodsworth by Sinclair Lewis

- Tarzan and the Lost Empire by Edgar Rice Burroughs

- Some Freeman Wills Crofts

- Some S. S. Van Dyne

- Some Edgar Wallace

- Quite a few miscellaneous mysteries that could possibly be on the
Cornerstones list

If you want to work on any of these, I ask the following:

1. You must have already finished at least 1 ebook with us.

2. You must commit to handing this off to your reviewer by Dec 1, and
wrap up any review issues by Dec 15.

3. Since these are not PD *yet*, you must not create a Github repo.
Instead, work on it privately and when you're done, email me a zip file
of your repo privately. You *may* discuss issues on the list.

If you want to work on any of these, or some other 1929 book, please
reply to this thread so we can avoid duplicate work.

I'd like to do the Woolf if it can be a standalone. (I wouldn't mind doing the omnibus later, if no one else wants it, but couldn't commit to completing that before Dec 1).

What would you need to know to decide whether it can stand alone? This bibliography suggests that by 1980 it hadn't been printed in full as part of a collection (except in non-English translation), only excerpted or published alone, if that helps.

Could I have the first Josephine Tey novel, The Man in the Queue?

I don't know, I didn't look into it much.

She does seem to have quite a few essays published, many of which are
already PD. There have been print editions of omnibuses of her essays
but I don't know if they include Room. Maybe someone can look into that
more.

Room is just under 40k words so it should technically go in such an omnibus.

But from our perspective, really the only thing Room has going for it
contra omnibus is that it's one of her most famous works. But that
hasn't stopped us from doing omnibuses of other things in the past.

> There have been print editions of omnibuses of her essays but I don't know if they include Room.
That was what I was getting at when linking the bibliography. That was published in 1980 but I just saw a print omnibus from the 21st century including it in its entirety, so I think that means an SE omnibus is necessary. (But I'm not clear on whether the usual criterion for essays is "has it ever been published in two different volumes" or "has it been published in two different volumes in the author's lifetime", or something else.)

The criterion is "is it short" (under 40k words) which Room
*technically* is but just barely. The question is "since it's short on a
technicality should it stand on its own?" But if other omnibuses have
included it then perhaps not.

The other question is what are the rest of her essays about? We're not
interested in stuff like specific literary criticism, book reviews, that
sort of thing, so does she have enough of timeless thinkpieces to
qualify for an omnibus? I don't know

I would argue that Partners in Crime should be its own production. It's somewhere between a series of stories and a novel and reviewers at the time couldn't quite decide which is was; the protagonists, Tommy and Tuppence, get an assignment in the first story to run a detective agency that is a cover for a spy ring, then break up the spy ring in the last; in between they do a series of unrelated cases each of which is  used as a parody of a different fictional detective (including parodies of Freeman Wills Crofts, GK Chesterton, Conan Doyle and Christie herself). Many of them were published separately but were then revised to be part of the collection with through lines added to them. So it's not straightforward but in its finished form it feels to me like a complete volume--it wouldn't make much sense to dip in and out and read them as individual stories.

There's a good half-dozen "1929" titles that interest me; unfortunately, I cannot find transcriptions for any of them! :/ Mostly I've just checked fadedpage.com, but are there other possible sources of transcriptions one can use?

Also, since Alex mentions it, here's the list of 1929 Haycraft-Queen Cornerstones books in case anyone's interested:
  • Berkeley, Anthony, The Poisoned Chocolates Case
  • Burnett, W.R., Little Caesar
  • Eberhart, Mignon G., The Patient in Room 18
  • King, Rufus, Murder by the Clock
  • O’Higgins, Harvey J., Detective Duff Unravels It
  • Queen, Ellery, The Roman Hat Murder
  • Stribling, T.S., Clues of the Caribbees

Other public domain sources I've used before are Project Gutenberg Australia and Wikisource. Both sometimes have books not on PG or FadedPage--PG-A because of Australia's relatively short copyright term, and Wikisource because they do basically no verification of copyright status.

In both cases there's normally no indication of what printed edition was used, so you need to be very careful with either to make sure there's no later, copyrighted material involved.

We’ve kept a “set” of stories like that together in omnibuses before: O Henry has one in his Shorts.

But, given how famous her characters are (see Jeeves), I would tend to agree: separate ones for Poirot, T/T, etc.

Step away for five minutes…

I don’t believe I saw anyone take Sound and Fury? It not, I’ll take it.

One of the Queen’s of the Golden Age, Margery Allingham’s first Albert Campion novel is up this year; I have it mostly done for personal reasons, so I’ll add it. It may not be needed for the 1st though; up to you.

The transcription will require running `british2american`, so that will take a bit of care. But it retains italics, so that's good! Hope this looks okay.

Someone with greater familiarity can correct me but it doesn't look like there's always a clear distinction between essay/thinkpiece and review in Woolf's case. According to the bibliography she was a prolific reviewer, and many of her pieces collected later as "essays" were first published individually as reviews (e.g. quite a few from the first volume of The Common Reader, including Jane Austen, Montaigne, and The Modern Essay; then others from not-yet-PD collections such as Granite and Rainbow and The Moment).

Would you exclude anything first published as a review? If not, it sounds like someone would need to try to track down every pre-1930 periodical contribution and make a judgement about content. The 1980 bibliography I linked lists 322 pre-1930 contributions, so it'd be some work.

I was thinking of doing Nella Larsen's second novel Passing, which was first published in 1929. There are scans at IA and a Wikisource transcription where it's claimed that it's already PD because copyright wasn't renewed, but I don't know how to verify that. Since it is definitely PD next year, would you want it for January 1?

Unless it's on PG then we should wait until Jan 1. But you can work on
it as a 2025 book.

Also, the next volume from In Search of Lost Time, “The Captive,” is PD in 2025. As mentioned previously, I added it as a branch to my local copy of the existing repository; I’ve kept master synced with SE, so it should be “ready to merge.”

How do you want me to give it to you? Do you want me to generate a git patch, or send the whole repository again (it also contains a separate branch for the last volume that will be PD in 2026), or something else?

OK. I've realised that Passing is <35k words, and the author also published some short stories before (and her most famous one in) 1930. I think this means that Passing belongs in a short fiction omnibus too, if scans are available for any of the short stories; is that right?

If I can't find scans of the stories, would you want Passing released alone, or as the only element in a short fiction collection, in case scans of the other stories turn up?

That will be more complicated, since it's an existing ebook just wait
until Jan 1 or later to do a PR and I'll review and merge it then. Too
complicated for me to manage otherwise right now.

Correct, < 40k words is a short work and goes in an omnibus.

If the other shorts are PD and there are transcription, then no scans is
not a dealbreaker. You could still do the short fiction omnibus in that
case.

Two of her short stories are also available on Wikisource. Her only other novel,
"Quicksand" is ~47k words and has been published combined with Passing and
(some) of her short stories. In Anchor's omnibus "The Complete Fiction of Nella Larsen",
they published her novels Quicksand and Passing, with 3 of her short stories:
"The Wrong Man", "Freedom", and "Sanctuary"; of which, all but Quicksand and
"Sanctuary" have transcriptions available.

Actually now that I think about, we should indeed have page scans to
confirm these items were actually published in that year. So if we can't
find scans I would say we should not do these. So if we did Passing it
would be the only item in a short fiction "omnibus" until we can find
scans for the rest.

Quicksand is long enough to be its own ebook.

OK. Thanks for the links, Brendan. Were you interested in it? If so feel free, but if not I'll do it. I've searched the usual places (Hathi, Google Books, IA a few days ago) for scans of the stories without success, so it will likely just contain Passing.

When I was building out a list of possible projects / interesting books earlier, I had Quicksand on my list as I noticed it's from 1928.

I found a HathiTrust scan earlier at https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000536779 , but no PG transcript. Now that DP has recovered I thought to check there and I see it has a project underway – but it seems to have stalled for the past couple of years: https://www.pgdp.net/c/project.php?id=projectID624808f2a8907&detail_level=2 . I was considering leaving a note on the forum there, but it's hard sometimes to tell if I'm barking up the wrong tree, being somewhat new to all of it.

(Still looking for my next project, though I know it's going to be another week at least before I have time to spend on it.)

No, you can take it!
I'm not sure how relevant it is but Passing is in progress at PGDP, so it presumably passed copyright qualification for PG. It's just been in P3 limbo for the past year+ (waiting to be released into P3). Similarly to Quicksand as picklefactory noted

Ah, thanks. I did see it'd been cleared but for some reason it doesn't show up as an in-progress project when I search using author name. I had something cleared in the past in advance (i.e. they responded yes in 2023, but added a "do not upload before January 1, 2024" condition) so thought that the request for Passing might have been cleared with such a condition too. But it's also possible that it was cleared under Rule 6 (due to lack of copyright renewal, as the Wikisource transcription page also claims).

Does anyone know if you can view the outcome of clearance requests that you didn't submit? If it's already PD under PG's Rule 6 I guess it doesn't make sense to include Passing (/the Nella Larsen short fiction omnibus) among the January 1, 2025 releases.

If only the submitter can view the clearance request for Passing, then I'll ask on the PGDP forum whether it was cleared under Rule 6, though I don't know how likely a reply is.

We’ve had a major challenge in our household arise this week that’s going to be around for a while, so I’m going to have to relinquish The Sound and the Fury.

I’ve finished proofreading the Allingham (The Crime at Black Dudley), but the IA court case aftermath has removed any available scans (neither Hathi nor Google had any). I have a few questions from the proofreading that can't be answered without a scan, so it might have to wait until after the 1st as well.

The first Ellery Queen (The Roman Hat Mystery) is also PD next year, but I haven’t found either scans or transcriptions for it. (I own most of the Queens in electronic form, but again not having scans means nothing to check against.)

Regarding Passing, both the forum and PG copyright team replied that it was cleared under Rule 6, meaning that they take it to be PD already. So I guess I should proceed in the usual way for the omnibus, with a public repo and assigned manager?

OK, sure. Please use the production-notes metadata to note that this is
not on PG yet but it has been cleared by them. Also please start a new

OK. Does anyone else want to pick up Sound and the Fury? I think that
one is important to have ready.

Re. the rest can you find copies in a library maybe? As long as the
original copyright date is on there, reprints are fine.

Vince how far did you get in S&F? I'm wrapping up Red Harvest which was
pretty basic, maybe I can pick this one up.

After I saw Vince's post I started working on S&F to see whether I could commit to it. I brought it up to the point of first lint run in the step-by-step and am 30% through the proofread. A couple of basic lint issues in the text can be fixed immediately but most of them (relating to Faulkner's italics and non-standard punctuation) need checking against the scans, in my opinion. So are there scans? I couldn't find any on HathiTrust or Google so maybe they were on IA?

Obviously, as I didn't say anything, Hendrik is first in line if he would like to do it. I'm sure he would find much better cover art, so there's that :) Similarly I understand if you'd prefer to do it Alex. But if either of you don't particularly want to, I can commit to it. Descartes is unfortunately on hold until IA is back, and Passing is already PD; so while I plan to finish those as soon as I can, I'd be happy to prioritise S&F. I did finish the proofread of Passing the other day so could likely still wrap that up before Jan 1 too; it's cover art that is the issue there.

Yes, scans were on IA. If you have a local library they almost certainly
have a copy, this is a very popular book. IA will hopefully be back
online by the end of the week, or you could check out a copy from the
library.

Since you already started it, you go ahead and wrap it up. Thanks!

As always, pay attention to the copyright. It is a popular book, but I would suspect most editions in libraries would be more recent ones like the one I have, which have adjusted the text from the first edition. (“More recent” is relative; mine is forty years old, but that’s over forty years newer than the first edition. :)

The URL for the scans I found is https://archive.org/details/soundfuryfaulkne00faul, for whenever IA comes back up. It’s a borrow an hour at a time, so you won’t be able to download them.

The italics will just be unsemanticated italics (I already asked Alex about that); he uses it for chronological jumps, so they only occur in the first two narratives (chapters). I didn’t start proofreading, but I didn’t see anything other than those italics, i.e. any emphasis, etc.

The punctuation is most definitely non-standard; e.g. he doesn’t use apostrophes in contractions (dont rather than don’t), etc. From what I saw, the transcription generally matches the scan text, so I think it’s safe to assume the transcription is correct until proven otherwise. Having said that, I’ve found that FP transcriptions have more errors per book than the typical PG one, so you’ll probably need to proof more closely than normal.

I'll take Dodsworth by Sinclair Lewis.
The Faded Page transcription looks better than the PG Australia one. Once IA comes back I'll take send the scans.

Where'd you end up finding All Quiet? I was trying to find it too with little luck; then again, I am relatively new to the PD game...

Could I take Hardy Boys 7? I'll see how IA is this weekend and if it doesn't come back up, I'll try to get it from the library next week.

Sure, you can take the Hardy Boys.

Again you can use the original cover art, but make sure the page scans
and transcription are of the 1929 edition and not a later revision.

Note that I will need this in my inbox by Dec 1 so we have time to go
through a review and line it up for Jan 1.

I'm wrapping up All Quiet on the Western Front. Halfway through Laughing
Boy. After that I'll do Cup of Gold by Steinbeck.

Is anyone else interested in working on any more PD 2025 books?

You can get transcriptions from anywhere, including DRM-free publisher's
copies. You can also get print editions from local libraries to proof
against.

If I can find a transcription, I'd like to do "The Last September" by
Elizabeth Bowen, and, if I can get around to it, "Roper's Row" by
Warwick Deeping.

OK, but note that the project is having the "biggest hits" of 2025 ready
on Jan 1. After Jan 1 you can work on any 2025 book much more easily -
scans will be available, etc. So if it's not a biggest hit, you can just
wait a few months to work on it.

Okay! Those can wait.

"Look Homeward, Angel" by Thomas Wolfe, then. It has a [FP

I couldn't find the artwork anywhere outside of just the dust jacket of
the first edition. Probably original. Anyway, removing the title box
looks weird because the top and bottom sections don't match up. But I
did crop a part of the top section and upscale it. Attached is what it
looks like and, for reference, the original dust jacket.

OK, we have wrapped up these books:

- On Resolution by C. S. Forester

- Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett

- The Dain Curse by Dashiell Hammet

- All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

- A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

- Cup of Gold by John Steinbeck

- Laughing Boy by Oliver La Farge

- The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

We still have a few in progress:

- Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe

- Dodsworth by Sinclair Lewis

I'm going to work on the currently-PD The Secret of Chimneys by Agatha
Christie, which is the book before the 1929 Seven Dials Mystery. I'll
release that in November, then work on Seven Dials for PD Day, unless
someone wants to work on Seven Dials themselves.

Still available:

- Death of a Hero by Richard Aldington

- The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie

- Magnificent Obsession by Lloyd C. Douglas

- The Maracot Deep by Arthur Conan Doyle

- Tarzan and the Lost Empire by Edgar Rice Burroughs

I'm also open to suggestions, but remember that we want the "biggest
hits". If you want to work on something 1929 that's not a big hit, then
just wait a few months and it'll be much easier with page scans, etc.

I am still intending to complete work on The Man in the Queue by Josephine Tey, and I should be done within a week or two now that I have a print copy to check against.

Also, John Buchan's The Courts of the Morning is almost complete and will be coming to you soon. (Not the heaviest hitter, but an unusually "deep" novel among the Buchans I've read.)

I would have considered the Christie (despite the reviews!), but can find neither transcription nor scans ... makes it difficult! :)

(The C. S. Forester is Brown on Resolution, not that it matters here!

OK, we're making great progress on PD day 2025.

So far almost all the books are wrapped up.

In progress we still have:

- The Story of My Experiments with Truth by Mahatma Gandhi

- The Maracot Deep by Arthur Conan Doyle

- Dodsworth Sinclair Lewis

- Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe

Nobody has yet claimed the final entry, Hudson River Bracketed by Edith
Wharton.

If someone wants to work on that, it's a medium-length book at ~160k
words, and there is a transcription and scans available:

https://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks04/0400701h.html

https://archive.org/details/hudsonriverbrack0000edit_u6y6/page/n9/mode/2up

If nobody's interested in that one, I'll probably pick it up sometime
mid-December.

Yes, but the original copyright date is also there, which is all that
matters. You could use the scans you found too. Send it over via email

I won't have the epubs themselves ready ahead of time because I'm not
going to set the internal publication date until Jan 1.

I'm also not super concerned about them appearing on Apple Books exactly
on the day... you can just download them from the website on Jan 1 once
they're actually released.

Isn't Thea Von Harbou going to enter the public domain next year? Or her works are already there?

Em dom., 6 de out. de 2024 às 22:38, Alex Cabal <al...@standardebooks.org> escreveu:

Once thing I notice is that public domain day "PSA" posts on r/books can get a lot of traction and visibility, especially since that subreddit has a lot of users. I could prepare a text post in advance like this one, but with links to the SE editions of the books that will enter the public domain, and have it ready to post on New Year's day. What do you think? All I would need is the final list of PD books once we have it. I can also post to r/FreeEBOOKS although that one is not heavily moderated so pretty much anything could go on that subreddit.

Yes, I already have a PD day blog post prepared, draft at
https://standardebooks.org/blog/public-domain-day-2025

After Jan 1 there will be a list of books in that post with a short
blurb for each one, but the post is tied to the database and the books
are obviously not live in the database yet.

I've posted to r/freeebooks in the past and there's very little real
traction there, because it's an endless firehose of free slop. But if
someone wants to post there on Jan 1, then by all means do so.

r/books is more heavily moderated and I don't think they allow self
promotion so I don't know if I can post about it myself. But if someone
else wants to share that link on PD day, again, by all means.

My thought was that it would be possible to write a r/books post that is a discussion starter for PD it self that also happens to contain links to the SE ebooks. I think that would be ok under their moderation policy and would redirect a bit of the PD day traffic to SE. I can take that on if that would be of interest.

Absolutely! Go for it!

What do you think? All I would need is the final list of PD books once we have it. I can also post to r/FreeEBOOKS <https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeEBOOKS/ <https://www.reddit.com/r/FreeEBOOKS/>> although that one is not heavily moderated so pretty much anything could go on that subreddit.

As of today we have all of our 2025 ebooks finished and ready to be
released on Jan 1. Our final tally is 21 ebooks!

Thanks to everyone who worked hard to prepare these ebooks on time and
at the usual high quality of production. Looking forward to Jan 1!
