Great, that one would be a good start.

You could technically use the scans you found at Internet Archive
because they have a 1929 copyright date, but IA has incorrectly put them
behind a borrow wall so we can't download them to archive them. So, use
the Hatghis cans for now, which we can download to archive.

Keep the dedication but cut the "note" at the beginning. Since you have
front matter in the form of a dedication, you will have to include a
half title page. See the manual for copy and paste.

Since the title has a numeral (18) you will have to add an alternatee
title in the metadata spelling it out (eighteen). This is to facilitate
searches. Also see the manual for how to do this.

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

A few questions:

“The woman says ‘Explain’! Explain that I’ve gone straight off my head about a girl! ..." - In this case, should the ! after Explain be within the single quotes?

Or what about the ? here? “I believe your words were ‘I’d give my very soul for money’?” inquired the coroner nastily.

The story takes place in a hospital called St. Ann's - is there a semantic keyword for the St. abbreviation, which appears quite a lot?

Generally punctuation goes inside quotation marks, but in both those examples the ending punctuation belongs to the outer speaker so you can leave them as is.

St. should be wrapped in abbr tags. Semanticate should take care of that.

No, `` isn't the work of `se semanticate`: that's markup left over from the Project Gutenberg formatting. I generally do a search for `class="` around the moment of "splitting" body.xhtml into chapters to see how much of this kind of things the transcription contains.

Thanks, Lukas. Sorry, it seems I'm doing some of these changes out of order, which is leading to my confusion.

Another couple of questions:

- The text has "M'h'm" and "H'm'm" a couple of times, does this count as elision (right quote) or stretching out a word (hyphen)?

- Should "en masse" be italicized? It is in the original text and transcription, but I believe now it's considered "English enough." It's in M-W.

- Does in-line text of a letter or telegram need a semantic flag of some sort? Additionally, I can't find one specific to telegrams, would "letter" do?

- This book uses a couple of line breaks to indicate time has passed within a chapter. The transcription in PG has rendered them as <hr/>. Is that Ok to leave or do we have a better way of dealing with that? Additionally, one of the break in the page scans is denoted by "*****," another just by an extra line space. Any difference between those?

1. Right quotes

2. No, any word that appears in the abridged MW that isn't specifically marked as a foreign phrase is not set in italics by default.

3. You'll want letter semantics and also the telegram class. See https://standardebooks.org/manual/1.8.3/single-page#7.7.2

4. Unless there is some specific reason (e.g. the stars are referenced in the text) then I think you can treat those all using <hr/>

Additionally, one of the break in the page scans is denoted by "*****," another just by an extra line space. Any difference between those?

Are the stars at the top or bottom of a page? Publishers often used whitespace to indicate a break in the middle of a page, but stars or a line to indicate that there's a break across a page where it might not be obvious otherwise.

- There is a use of "A.M" without an appended time, should it still be turned into lowercase? "Sent laundry this <abbr class="eoc">A.M.</abbr> Am getting nervous about second watch."

The half-title page should have the same language as the rest of the book; I guess en-GB in this case.

Interesting question about A.M. I'd be inclined to treat it as normal and put it in lowercase. Maybe put this in a separate commit though so it's clear and easy to revert later if needed.

I am currently proofreading the book but as that goes on, I'd like to propose a cover art piece: The Agnew Clinic by Thomas Eakins. Public domain proof is the same book as for The Gross Clinic by the same artist (great use for Whose Body? by the way!). My proposed crop is below as it focuses on the nurse, the narrator of the book (and series) but I'm open to other suggestions.

There is also a pretty cool cover of I presume the first edition on Wikipedia, but it would need to be scaled up and rotated and I don't know how to do that.

Hi all,

I notice that the double em dashes (for obscuring a word other than its first letter, for example) are being rendered as two em dashes separated by a minute space in Apple Books on my iPhone. Is that normal? Are there any published Standard Ebooks with a known double em dash than I can compare?

If you are using the compatible epub, then the two-em-dash character is
replaced by two em dashes in a row, because the two-em-dash character
does not have wide font support.

Hello all,

I've completed a read through and identified a few words that could potentially be modernized. Any thoughts on the following, should they be changed?

- "egg-nogg" - obviously an old version of eggnog. I can't find it in Merriam-Webster

- "unclinched"/"clinched" - seems to be an old form of clenched. I think this variant is covered in Merriam-Webster, so I'm inclined to keep it.

- "reechoing" - should this be "re-echoing" or "reëchoing"?

You can modernize eggnog and keep clenched as you said. Reecho is one of those words that looks strange to me too, but it is in MW so you can keep it as is. It's likely already been treated by modernize-spelling.

I've also noticed that `re-e` words like `re-echo` don't look great when
the hyphen is removed. I've considered removing them all from the words
file and making an exception in the manual but never had strong enough
feelings about it to actually do it. Maybe I'll do that soon.

I know it's not the SE dictionary (MW is), but still, it's perhaps worth registering that the OED redirects "reecho" to "re-echo":

That’s likely British vs US differences—British spelling uses dashes in a number of places that US doesn’t. My Random House unabridged has reecho.

Just removing them from words isn’t enough, because if they’re already without dashes in the source, they would be left that way, and we’d have a mishmash.

I would prefer to stick with M-W personally, exceptions make it harder for both producer and reviewer. (Also, it doesn’t bother me; I thought reecho was correct before I looked it up.)

Regarding this A.M. -> a.m. change, I think it's a good idea to put it in a separate commit but I already combined it with a couple of other changes in a commit. What would be the best way of dealing with that?

What are the other changes? If they're editorial commits you'll have to rebase into separate commits. If they're not editorial, you can rebase it out if you want, or it might be sufficient to reword the commit message.

They're not editorial, it's just fixing the formatting of "se:name.music.song" (I had a period instead of the colon). I had it commented as "Fix semantics after lint."

Do I need any other fonts in addition to League Spartan?

I can't see the scans without borrowing them, but as far as I know the only other font we support is a blackletter font which I doubt is needed here.

I think just keeping them all as right single quotes is fine.

Regarding content.opf, does Sarah Keate count as a series? There are 7 books by Eberhart featuring her, enough for a Wikipedia page at least: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Keate

It's complaining about an abbr element in the colophon. Firstly, I don't know how to tell which abbr element it's complaining about, but both of them (author's initial and a.m. in the publication time) seem to be the same as other Ebooks' Colophons. So I am a bit confused.

Still not sure what's going on with that error, but while looking at the table of contents, I notice my ereader is not showing a space between the colon after the Roman numeral of Ch III and the chapter title. Is it because the title starts with an abbr element? ": <abbr epub:type="z3998:name-title">Dr.</abbr> Letheny Does Not Return"

Looks like it's just my ereader (Apple Books) as The D'Arblay Mystery has a similar chapter title with a similar display issue.

For the epubcheck error, I realized it's due to the first publication time element not having a "datetime=whatever." It's just "<time>January 1, 1900, 12:00 <abbr class="eoc">a.m.</abbr></time>." Should I keep it that way and ignore the error since the date and time will be added later?

Otherwise it should be ready for review.

I found time to do this this afternoon, and I've filed a review. Great job for a first production!

Unfortunately, the repo requires some rebasing. If that's new to you, let me know, but you may be much more git-adept than me. There are also plenty of guides to rebase tasks online.
